So the year we had frost calling plays, you are giving credit to Helfrich?pezsez1 wrote: Sat Dec 06, 2025 11:16 amThe year we had Mariota and went to the championship vs Ohio State. Ah, gotcha. For some reason, I had always assumed it was Frost and then Lubick calling plays for Helf.pezsez1 wrote: Sat Dec 06, 2025 11:16 amThe year we had Mariota and went to the championship vs Ohio State. Yes, Helfrich was the primary playcaller on offense while HC. This was common knowledge at the time.
He clearly wasn't cut out for the other roles of HC, but his play calls and understanding of the QB role were top shelf.

I’m not a big Helf believer. Was average at best at Colorado before coming to Oregon. Rode coat-tails of others for a while until he had to stand on his own and then slipped back into average-ville

…that said, he’s a great guy. My assessment of him had nothing to do with him as a good guy. He’s a great guy.

Helf is too nice a guy to run a college program. Doesn't have a throat cutting bone in his body.UofDuck wrote: Sat Dec 06, 2025 3:18 pm …that said, he’s a great guy. My assessment of him had nothing to do with him as a good guy. He’s a great guy.
And that is not a slight against him. He got a bum deal here because he never should have been promoted in the first place.

Re: Oregon OC search
If Helfrich was actively coaching somewhere else I could see Dan in the future hiring him on as an OC but bringing him off the bench cold isn't the right call.
Rob Mullens might as well create a Players to Coaches Program as we've got quite a few alumni coaching in the HS ranks with varying levels of collegiate/pro success and it could be one of those things done now that benefits the program far down the line.
Not sure which former DB is going to get the West Linn job be it Molden or Newman, lol.

Re: Oregon OC search
Can you show proof of that? I get you love to be the contrarian when it comes to sticking up for bad coaches, and while Helf knows offense and I’m not saying he doesn’t, he also never was really a play caller much during his time as OC at any stops.pezsez1 wrote: Sat Dec 06, 2025 11:16 amThe year we had Mariota and went to the championship vs Ohio State. Re: Oregon OC search
You know what, you're right -- he didn't call all the plays, just some of them. But if you look at his body of work while we had strong QB play my point still stands that he was an elite offensive playcaller.
I know that you love putting words in people's mouths, but perhaps you should re-read my post and think about the part where I said he wasn't really that great at the other responsibilities of head coaching.
If you want to keep arguing over his value as an offensive playcaller though then perhaps you should write a strongly worded letter to Chip Kelly who impressed enough with his abilities to recommend him for HC.
