So......I'm new here, and no one really has to give merit to anything I write.....but I think giving Coach Kelly a free pass in this is a mistake.....I have reason to believe that things are NOT GOING WELL. I pray that the exodus is over, but terrified that it's not.

Well apparently I'm in the minority. The writing was on the wall for quite some time since his homesickness comments, so it shouldn't exactly be a MAJOR surprise. As a Duck fan, yeah I'm very disappointed Chris Harper transferred since I believe he could have been a valuable WR/wildcat type player in our offense, but at the same time there is more to life than just football. If Chris Harper didn't feel like he was in the right place here then he should have every right to transfer. Why stay somewhere you don't want to be? You can talk all you want about how he'll be ruining his career at Kansas State (maybe he will, maybe he won't), but if that's where his heart is (which it sounds like that is the case) then I can do nothing but wish him the best except for when we meet him in 2010 at K State. While depth is now a bigger issue, I don't think the sky is falling like some are suggesting. From the sounds of things Chip is being honest about where everyone stands on the depth chart and naturally there will be those who do not like their position on it (appears to be the case for Roper and maybe Pflugrad, although I think his dad being let go may have been a factor as well). Chris' situation is very different since he had a very good chance to play SOMEWHERE on the field. Maybe he was a little pissed about not playing QB (I do think he got too much of a bad rap during the Boise game since his shoulder injury only allowed him to make certain throws and maybe should have gotten another chance when his shoulder was a bit more healthy) and if that is the case then he has a much, much better chance at K State where he has the opportunity to be the future QB for the man who was more or less the godfather of the spread option offense (Bill Snyder) closer to home.

I'm not going to be pissed at someone who wants to be closer to home and his family.

I'm pisted but not shocked by this news, the guy just misses home. We definitely could have used him but he's now gone...good luck C-HARP!

Damn it I really wanted to see this guys versatility...DAMN IT ALL TO HELL!

Really? Epic loss? I mean yeah the guy is very athletic and has a very high potential but epic loss? Losing Dixon to an ACL injury during the Arizona game was an epic loss. Haloti Ngata leaving a year early was an epic loss (for us more than him). Him transferring sucks, don't get me wrong. But he had yet to reach his potential. I guess we will find out in 2-4 years if it will have been an epic loss but as of now, it's not an epic loss.

It definitely hurts the depth as far as proven or semi-proven WRs are concerned.

One thing is certain: if he comes to Eugene with K-State, he's going to catch hell.

What is the reason you have to believe that?

I'm having a hard time getting my head around this "homesickness" explanation. What exactly is he missing so much that he can't learn to be happy without it like every other college student has to? What is he going to do if/when he gets into the NFL and has to leave home? I don't know. Just seems fishy like an easy answer to avoid getting into the real issue.

I believe there is more to Harper's reason for transferring. I think that him not being a QB and being somewhat buried on the WR depth chart weighed very heavily into his decision.

I do too. So, why include "homesickness" at all? Sounds to me like covering something up.

Homesickness... wtf is that?

We're playing in Manhattan during what would be his RS junior year and maybe they make the return trip back his senior year (goducks doesn't have a schedule further than the 2011/2012 season). If they do come back in 2012 you'd probably be right although I would feel bad for the guy if he did (even if I was pissed at the guy now, which I'm not, I'd probably feel bad for him 2 1/2ish years after the fact unless of course he ended up being a Heisman candidate at K State playing quarterback then I'd be pissed at our coaches for not using him there when he was still with us)

I don't know. With this many transfers in a short time, I think it has at least graduated to "situation" status. Something that Chip Kelly should come out and explain/address to clear the air of any misunderstandings and speculation. One or two transfers and people can shrug their shoulders about the reasons. More than that and it could hurt recruiting to not dispel the unknown.

Does anyone remember watching him throw? He will have to practice the position for 2 years just to get some mechanics in order. Then he has to practice staying in the pocket long enough to make reads and get a throw off before just tucking and running.
I don't think playing QB was the main issue, and if he is determined to play it, go elsewhere, I didn't see him growing into a Heisman caliber QB anytime soon. Could be wrong, but I'll take my chances.
