District 9... 9.5/10 Loved it didn't know what to expect and it exceeded my expectations!
GI Joe...6.5/10 not bad, entertaining
Sherlock Holmes...8.5/10 Great take on a an old classic!
Star Trek...8.5/10 I'm a Trekkie, so it was great and I can't wait to they continue with this group...everyone else got to old!
Damn I never get to see many movies so I've been a little nutz lately! (my little kids at home)
Peace.
For me:
Avatar: 7/10 The story was one of the worst stories I've ever seen. It's all about taking down a tree? really? If it wasn't for the great filming and crazy shots from up high, it would have been brutal.
GI Joe: 5.5/10. Same way I feel
Sherlock Holmes: 9/10 Really loved the way they translated Shelock from the books. They did a great job and were some hilarious lines. VERY entertaining. I was surprised how good this movie was.
Star Trek 8/10 The movie had some flaws, but an interesting plot.

Anybody seen the trailers for Shutter Island? Looks really really good and pretty damn scary.
Never heard of it. Just watched the trailer. That looks really good. Scosese has really made some great movies and certainly hasn't lost his edge. The cast looks great too. I'll be watching this one for sure.

I interpreted Avatar a little bit differently. It's basically a story full of metaphors for contemporary social debates. It touches on capitalism and energy dependence, highlighting a insatiable drive for natural resources. Neo-colonialism, in that the drive for resources can lead to the oppression or outright elimination of local populations. It prompts discussions on science and religion (the creation of a living being through test tubes?). Ethnocentrism, privatization of war, environmentalism (repeated references to the Human's depleted planet)....
I enjoyed the sort of social commentary it presented; so combined with the special effects I really enjoyed it. The "human bashing" was a little awkward but not anymore so than District 9. Gotta love pop culture; vampires then space/aliens. What's next?

A "7" for Avatar...damn dude whats up with that! But seriously yes the movie had an agenda and the story was pretty simple and the political, tree hugging ect views were a little much (I was getting tired of this as well) but the movie itself had incredible technology and visuals...the things they are doing now, computer wise, is unreal! Comparing this movie to just a few years ago it just wasn't possible...this is what I loved!
I also saw...
The Hangover: 8/10 I had higher hopes for this one but it was funny and I stayed up way to late to watch it.

Agreed that the make the American military look like the bad guy against the peaceful mystical hippies was quite annoying. But hey, almost all movies have some political agenda, so whatever. But the rest of the movie completely blew me away and put the annoying plot on the back burner for a while.
So ya just saw Avatar in 3d and must say I was blown away. The story is basically rehashing 50% of every other movie our there (star wars, Lotr, just about any epic) but the visuals and the way they made you actually care about 12 foot googily eyed aliens was pretty impressive. Acts 1 & 2 were especially good while act 3 was just ok. overall, I'd give it an 8 or 9.
I guess part of my unliking of Avatar was because of the awful back pains I was having during the 3 hour movie. I couldn't wait for the movie to end partly because of the plot, but mostly because of that awful back pain. I think it's ruined my back forever. Ever since the movie, the pain has not gone away. That's what will be in my mind when I look back on this movie. Not about the special effects and such, but of the torture I went through.
Because I'm tired of talking about our football team and wanna talk about other stuff...
Hurt Locker 8.5/10: Pretty good. I thought Jeremy Renner did a brilliant job. Always been a fan of his. Some parts were a little strange but I thought it was quite good.
District 9 7/10: It was ok. I didn't really know what was going on for the first half. Was not the movie I was expecting but picked up at the end.
Public Enemies 7.5/10: Johnny Depp was great, Christian Bale was completely forgettable. It was mostly good and I had to watch it over the course of a couple of days so it was a little disjointed but overall not too bad.
GI Joe 3/10: yah special effects, boo everything else.

Thank god someone acknowledged how mediocre District 9 was. The movie was stupid. Cool CGI and stuff, but what movie nowadays doesn't have that? There were so many inconsistencies and shortcuts in the plot. Just seemed lazy to me.

Ya. I was pretty dissapointed. Was not the potential oscar winner I thought it would be. Mildly entertaining once I figured out what was going on. Maybe it'd be better on a second viewing but I dont think I wanna see it again
Beckett 9/10: oldie but a goodie. I think it was made back in the 60's and has Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton in it. For anyone who likes a good story even if it has no special effects, I def recommend it. For anyone with Netflix, its one of their online plays and is definately worth watching.
