OSewe to drop sports?

Personally I'd laugh so hard I'd have to change my underwear if the beavises had to leave the Pac-10 and play 1-AA football.

Re: OSewe to drop sports?
Well they can't cut football, it says that in the article. They also can't cut men's and women's basketball, and volleyball. I surprised baseball isn't on that list. And in others articles it sounded like they would cut sports one by one, starting with most likely wrestling. But there it makes it sound like they would cut them all at once. That would be crazy if they went from 17 scholarship sports to 4.

Re: OSewe to drop sports?
After some of the high and mighty rants the Beavises threw around when Oregon cut wrestling, and added baseball, it is sorta poetic justice.
I hate to see schools lose their sports programs. Let's just say, here's hoping the economy doesn't start slapping Oregon around that hard. Personally, I think the Duck AD is better managed than OS.

Re: OSewe to drop sports?
I would almost want Phil Knight to give them some money at the last minute to save their sports. Not only would it just be enough to keep them from being cut, and not improve them, but they would have to swallow some serious pride and thank him while never bagging on him again. That would be pretty awesome.

Not to burst your bubble, but Knight already has given OS lots of money to keep Casey as the baseball coach and they still bag on him.

Re: OSewe to drop sports?
How many OS engineering students does it take to figure out how to light a bag of cow flop on the professor's front porch, ring a door bell, and run away?
That seems to be the level of intelligence involved in their constant complaining about Phil Knight...

Nothing to do with sports, but the OSU Cascades campus in Bend is in danger of closing all together. That would really hit the community hard.

Well if that happens, maybe the O could open a satelite campus there.goducks wrote:Nothing to do with sports, but the OSU Cascades campus in Bend is in danger of closing all together. That would really hit the community hard.

What's interesting about that nogerO is that, at least down at S.Oregon U, I've heard they are changing to the University of Oregon at Ashland. I'm not sure how that works but it's kind of the same type of thing they do in Cali.

20.9.7 Football Bowl Subdivision Requirements. [FBS] An institution classified in the Football Bowl
Subdivision shall meet the additional requirements listed below. (Revised: 12/15/06)
20.9.7.1 Sports Sponsorship. The institution shall sponsor a minimum of 16 varsity intercollegiate sports,
including football, based on the minimum sports sponsorship and scheduling requirements set forth in Bylaws
20.9.4 and 20.9.4.3, including a minimum of six sports involving all-male teams or mixed teams of males and
females, and a minimum of eight varsity intercollegiate sports (of which a maximum of two emerging sports
per Bylaw 20.02.5 may be used) based on the minimum sports sponsorship and scheduling requirements set
forth in Bylaws 20.9.4 and 20.9.4.3 and involving all-female teams, subject to the waiver provision in Bylaw
20.9.4.2. (Revised: 1/11/94 effective 9/1/94; compliance required during the 1993-94 academic year, 4/25/02 effective
8/1/04)
20.9.7.2 Football Scheduling
Read what I just posted....or I guess I could simplify...in order to maintain eligibility as a Football Bowl Subdivision school, an institution must have 16 sports with 6 all male or mixed and 8 all female minimum...Looking at the Register Guard column, it states that the Beavers currently have 17 sports, if They are forced to cut 2 sports, they would fall under the minimum for FBS requirement, and would be given warning. In the case of the warning, as I read it, The Beavers would be given 1 year to meet the requirements again, and if they failed that, they would be placed into restricted FBS membership, meaning no postseason play, if they failed to get back to the minimum sports requirements, they would be required to drop out of FBS for Football, but would remain a Divsion 1 team, just not a FBS team in Footall, instead, it appears they would be FCS....and Notice that DeCarolis says nothing about retaining FBS standing status just NCAA and Pac-10 membership
That leaves Oregon State now confronting this bottom line: Unless donor dollars increase, some minor sports might disappear. The only sports that would be exempt from consideration are football, men's and women's basketball and volleyball, which are all required to maintain the Beavers' Division I standing and membership in the Pacific-10 Conference.
now maybe I am reading this all wrong, and I doubt it comes to this....(it would be three years from now if it were to happen), but I think I read it correctly.

I think you are reading it correctly but I don't think OSU will drop down. I think their situation will improve once the economy improves and they get more donors.Brophdog88 wrote:20.9.7 Football Bowl Subdivision Requirements. [FBS] An institution classified in the Football Bowl

According to the CBO, GDP is supposed to swing back starting in 2010. I'm trying to believe... still waiting for this hope that was voted for to kick in.stewbertwilloughby wrote:Don't mean to sound like a negative Nancy, but whose to say the economy will improve in the next couple of years?

Re: OSewe to drop sports?
I would kind of hate to see them lose some sports due to money issues, but I guess it is their own fault for the most part. They bulid the new stadium and have only like 4 or 5 sell outs. The one article said if they get something like 6,500 more season tickets then they will have enough money. I guess Beaver nation isn't as large as some think. I know my duck fans would rally and get the money they need, but will beaver nation?
Oh and I heard a quote the other day from a beaver would said they would rather have no money and cut sports then have someone like Phil knight give them money....are you serious? I then had to remind him that every time he buys a beaver shirt with the nike logo (they are a nike school) that they are supporting the ducks...I said thank you!
