So, on the "other" board's open season...

Post by nogerO »

They have instituted a policy of screening all posts unless you're a "Premium" member. Thinly veiled ploy to get people to pony up $10 a month. So long eDuck...

Sad thing is it was a good board back when it started (Duck74 I believe) and now its just trash talking and trash from the users paying or not. I used to be there at one time and even paid up for a year, but I found that even if the customer is paying it means nothing to them. Boy am I glad I found this board.

Too bad, so sad... The trash talking garbage was getting bad.

Good lesson in what not to do to this board!

I agree. It's funny how horrible they are to read through after being spoiled by all of the solid contributers here and on top of that not have to deal with constant flaming.

This place is an island paradise in a sea of crappy sites.

Oddly enough what got me into recruiting was educk's free forum. At first I thought it was so awesome. Just for fun I checked into the open forums about 6 months ago. Wow! After being on this board it's quite comical, scout has had a bit of trouble keeping subscribers lately. Can't imagine this helps.

I enjoy a good flame, both reading them and writing them.

The problem is that the quality of the writing of the average poster has dipped precipitously in the past decade. The farking and sig pic type slam has also become weak.

My theory is that texting has made plenty of morons who cannot compose anything witty in any language and whose idea of comedy is hotlinked porn and profane or scatological "writing."

It's rather tragic actually. BeaverFootball.com was once a vibrant and rollicking little den of iniquity which was actually fun to visit. Then, the head mangina of Cougfarm bought the site and turned into Pure-Hate lite. This basically caused a refugee flood of homeless beavis posters, some of whom are the lesser lights of all the internet. No doubt some of them have been banned from educk several times by now. Add to that a recent surge of idiotic dawg and donkey posters and no doubt they are dealing with an epidemic of sorts.

But they are dealing with that epidemic in a heavy handed way, primarily because their moderation has sucked for years now. Not to name names, but the most visible moderator usually on Open Season isn't very effective at it.

I came up with the original variant of Nogero's captioned graphical signature. I view such efforts as clean humor that harmlessly pokes fun at Oregon State. Now, you can have neither an avatar or a signature on Open Season.

If all boards everywhere are sterile and earnest discussions featuring only the fans of the team in question along with carefully screened and heavily moderated suck-ups from other sites, much of the bantering between opposing fans that makes college football more fun than following a professional team or a more genteel sport, like tennis, is lost. A place like Open Season, or Dawgman's Football Forum is a great part of the internet's college football ecosystem, one that is only missed after it is wiped out.

Just because there are criminally stupid arsonists out there doesn't mean everyone has to get permission to use fire making materials.

My favorite site before this was OregonLive because I could get info before the others...and of Greg Biggins old site on Student Sports which is now gone, bought out by ESPN.

I also think its part ploy to get people to spend $$. How hard is it to police? If they wanted to get rid of troublemakers they could have easily but chose not to.

If cash is the objective of sanitizing Open Season, it's a dumb move. First, prescreening every post reduces traffic stats for advertisers. Second, a cleaned up OS makes the Pond redundant.

Many fans are like me in that following recruiting is about as much fun as tracking the dating antics of teenage girls. IOW, it's stupid and will never be a lucrative deal because the info is either rumor, speculation, or stale within minutes of being verified. Every February, unless one of the beauty queens has a street pimp dragging things out, we all find out that we get who we got.

Couple of things...

I found Duck74 (Mr. Summers graduated from Oregon in 1974, hence the name) and followed when it morphed into eDuck. I too paid out the money for a "Premium" membership for a year and cancelled it because there was simply no bang for the buck. Personally, I am aquainted with both Steve and Marty and like them both. Open Season used to be wide, wide open to just about anything short of porn, but has become sanitized. The constant posts with links to Premium Content really started to bug me, and all the flaming by Fuskies, Beavises and lately the Donkey fans is just too much stuff to try to sift through every time you visit. Thank God for these forums!!!

Second, to Canard-I didn't think you'd mind if I used your buck-toothed beaver fan as my sig. If you object to me using it I will gladly use something else. I only saw it for a day or two and then it was gone and it was just too damned funny not to have around this board.
To Mops, Tk and Aju once again thank you so much for this island of sanity and it's wealth of great information and the great community of Duck fans who have flocked here!

There is a thread on OS that is talking about the changes and I posted a link to this site, but it was magically poofed into cyberspace junkyard.

I used to come home and sit down at the computer and the first place I visited was eDuck followed by C4Q. Not anymore, I won't be going back there anytime soon as I can get all the info and banter here I need.

Thanks again to all!

Go ahead and OWN the graphic if you want to. I wasn't calling you out on it, just using it as an example of how a decent flame goes and gets some real love instead of merely being forced attempts at absolute stupidity.

IIRC, I made that little graphic during the spat over the Made in Oregon sign controversy and offered to have it placed in the PDX Airport and at the borders of Oregon so the beevur posters wouldn't feel slighted on the attention front.

Point being is that it is harmless, but it has no place in the not so brave new world over on Brand X.

No problem big guy, I didn't read it as you calling me out, just making sure you didn't care.

I enjoy your posts, especially in the old days on "brand x"

Was that 'Buck-Tooth-Beaver-Boy the result of a mis-begotten animal husbandry study gone terribly awry at the OS Memorial Veterinary and Fertility Clinic for the Criminally Negligent?
