Sucks a lot, but like phenom said at least we got depth. Reed should be fine, but Irvin was pretty awesome as a freshman.

spencer would be a shock simply from a developmental standpoint. he didn't look anywhere near ready last i saw him, if he's going to be handed a rotation spot he either made uncanny jumps this offseason or our pitching depth was wildly overrated.

porter clayton had high level stuff out of HS. if he's not too rusty, i'd love to see what he's got now.

according to horton (by way of moseley on goducks.com) it looks like it'll be thorpe/krook/gold/spencer next weekend.

gold's sophomore/junior stats:

2012: 8-4 (3.66 era) 76.1 IP, 19 apperances/13 starts 46K/24BB b/avg: .262
2013: 4-0 (2.20 era) 41 IP, 13 appearance/5 starts 35 K/8BB b/avg: .237

he didn't pitch as much last year, but we had a stocked rotation and remember gold started on sundays in '12 after tessar went down. his #'s improved across the board last year, i remember thinking on several instances that his command over his stuff looked like it had improved dramatically. improvements in his K/BB ratio and opponent BA are exciting, as a fan.

spencer's freshman/sophomore stats:

2012: 4-2 (4.66 era) 38 IP, 12 appearances/6 starts 19K/18BB b/avg: .230
2013: 2-0 (4.00 era) 18 IP, 12 appearances/2 starts 10K/11 BB v/avg: .284

hard to get much of a read on spencer's sophomore year, because horton really didn't use him. his claim to fame, of course, came in '12 when he no-hit portland. aside from that game, though, he was not overly effective. like gold, he pitched quite a bit in '12 because we got so thin w/ the injuries to tessar christian jones. i'm pretty comfortable with gold, but spencer's name surprised me when he surfaced as a replacement. but according to moseley, he's supposed to have really refined his off-speed stuff and worked some of the kinks out of his throwing motion. his fastball has life on it, if he's able to control the K zone and keep batters off-balance with the off speed stuff, more power to him. i believe he was the #3 recruit in the state of oregon after his senior year.
