Is Carroll angry that Sanchez opted for NFL draft?

January 15, 2009 4:07 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Ted Miller

USC coach Pete Carroll said he tried to talk quarterback Mark Sanchez out of forgoing his senior season and entering the NFL draft.

"Mark is going against the grain and he knows that," Carroll said in the AP story. "And he's OK about that."

But is Carroll OK with it?

Here's the LA Daily News Scott Wolf's take on his blog from Thursday's news conference:

USC coach Pete Carroll was extremely ungracious during the Mark Sanchez press conference. He stormed out of the room and did not even sit at the table before Sanchez addressed the media. Something he never did when Matt Leinart, etc., announced their decisions.

Carroll never sat down at the table but stood with his palms on the table. His anger was clear if you spend time around him.

Not a great moment.

Wolf also added this:

There's quite a bit of anger being expressed within the athletic dept. at the highest levels right now regarding Mark Sanchez's departure.

I'm getting the feeling Mark Sanchez will not be honored at any functions in the near future.

And this:

Considering Pete Carroll's demeanor and actions at Mark Sanchez's press conference, I'm wondering what he will tell NFL teams when they call about Sanchez. Because he plays quarterback it might not matter, but one has to think Carroll will give an unvarnished opinion now that Sanchez left without his seal of approval.

You'd almost think Pete Carroll was moderately surprised by Sanchez decision to enter the draft.

Wasn't BB supposed to be there this past weekend? How was it that PC was in Hawaii then?

It would be very strange for PC not to have been there for his visit!

Let me get this right...does "USC" stand for "University of Spoiled Children" or "University of Spoiled Coaches?"

Ah, it's good for "F-Bomb Petey" to hear the word "no" from time to time!

Hey, he spoke the truth. I have no problem with honesty. I actually don't mind Carroll. I saw something on tv where he talks to gang members in los angeles after games to try to get their lives in order.

Hahahaha, but man I still wish we could have a tie breaker with Sanchez. Do they still have Mustain?

Sanchez put it together this year and he wants him back to have a great offense. Having to develop another QB is a problem they didn't want to have considering USC lost almost all of their offensive minds. This is good for us. I like it.

I think Carrol was also thinking that he wasn't going to have to pick between the three left for this upcoming season and he could let them all still sit on the bench another year. Since corp is only a sophomore he could bolt if he isn't the starter. This just proves to me the SC game a few years back when he was MF'ing Bellotti is his true character. I love that he said that d. sanch hasn't started enough games uhm tell me who is in better shape in the NFL right now Matty ice Lienart (3 year starter) or Matt Cassell (0 starts in sc career).

It does seem he has forgotten his players as you point out.

the frustration is finally starting to show for hollywood pete after a rough year...
1. Constant recruiting battles coming out of westwood, the weasel will make it hard to keep all the talent in socal from now on.
2. losing 3/4 of his all everything defense
3. just lost his starting qb and offensive was supposed to be the strength for next year
4. lost his offensive and defensive coords
5. another shameful loss in beefur stadium

the cracks are starting to show in petey's armor now we just need to beat them next year and end this 7 year run...

With SC hurting and all the JUCO players we have and are going after the next 2 years could very well be great ones for us!

Not to mention most of their defense...
