Has anyone else been following this?

Still yet to be ranked are Oregon, Oregon State, Cal and USC so they'll all definitely be in the top 30.

I was kind of surprised to see UCLA, Stanford and Arizona all ranked so low. The Pac-10 continues to get no respect. To be completely honest, next to Boise State, those three road games worry me more than any others. If UCLA and Arizona can get decent QB play they'll be formidable and Harbaugh is building Stanford into a solid program that's going to win some games this season, and maybe even go to a bowl game.

Top to bottom, the Pac-10 is getting tougher.

I have not been following it but have said on other threads that Stanford will cost a team the pac 10 championship. Hopefully it will not be Oregon. I think Stanford will be in a bowl game. UCLA is a question mark. QB play is gonna be the key for them as you pointed out. They have a pretty good defense. It will be interesting with our questions on offensive line and receivers whether rivals will have the top 3 being USC Oregon then Cal... or USC Cal then Oregon. Time will tell.

Oregon State = #26

Oregon is guaranteed to be in the top 23 at this point.

I'm worried about Stanford. You saw what they almost did to us last year, and what they did to USC the year before last. It's nice having them a solid team to help bulk up the Pac-10, but not at the expense of the Ducks!

I think anyone that underestimates Stanford may get handed their lunch. They are on the rise and could easily reach a bowl game this season. I just hope that we don't fall victim to them.

This doesn't really surprise me. Actually, it's probably right about where they should be to start the season. They finished #10 last year and lost a lot of starters from what was an excellent offensive line, as well as losing big pieces on defense, Reed, Byrd, Chung. To lose that many quality players and only drop seven spots is a tribute to how far our program has come.

Fortunately (and unfortunately), our strength of schedule is so tough the first month that if we come out of the first four games 4-0 there's no way they can deny us a top 10 ranking. Lose one game and we'd probably stay right around where we are now.

The O-Line and D-Line are going to have to prove themselves early. Do that, and we're set up to have a special season.

17th seems a bit low. I was thinking late single digits - early teens. But it doesn't bother me whatsoever if that's what our starting ranking ends up to be. If we win our first 4 games, we'll easily be in the top 10.

Lets just take all guess work out of the equation and win all of our games and go for the #1 ranking.

Agreed. Regardless of where we're ranked, it will be rectified after September.

Except for that no team that has started outside of the top 10 in the preseason polls has ever gone to the National Championship game

We were on our way in 2007, so it is possible! Lets start a new trend in 2009... man I cant wait until Sept 3rd...

Assuming we lose one game (to even have a shot at the national title), that means we would have beaten a combination of USC, Cal, Utah and Boise St. Assuming all of those teams have solid years, it should give us a shot at the NC game depending on if teams from other conferences go undefeated or who their one loss is.

An undefeated Oregon team will go the NC game. Except if there's an undefeated Florida and Oklahoma/Texas. Then we might be in trouble.

I honestly don't think we will go undefeated this season, but I'm sure that if we did our luck would be that a combination of Florida, Texas or Oklahoma will also be undefeated.

Oklahoma, Texas and Florida would all get picked over Oregon to go to the NC regardless of ranking or strength of schedule. So if any of those other two teams were undefeated as well as Oregon, the Ducks would be playing in another BCS game and not the NC just like 2001. I don't think Texas or Oklahoma will go undefeated but I am almost certain the Ducks won't either so I am just looking for another 10 win season, another top 10 ranking and hopefully a BCS bowl game victory and look towards going to a NC the following year!
