USA Today Preseason Poll

Oregon at #14. I know it's lower than we've been ranked at some other polls, but I don't mind having our players feel like they have to prove something. I think it builds some fire in them.

Better than out of the top 40, eh? I agree with the motivation aspect. Always better to have something to prove rather than feeling entitled.

Until that first game, that sounds about right to me.

#14 sounds about right... there are only 17 points separating 12/13/14 with a big gap up to 11 and a big gap down to 15. So us being in the 12/13/14 range sounds about good....

14 may sound good, until you see LSU at 9 and Georgia at 13 and Cal at 12 and Okie State at 11 and ND at 23.

There are 5 SEC teams ranked ahead of Oregon. :x 5. FIVE!? :? Come on, five? Are they serious?

I'm pretty sure that they are going to be motivated regardless of the rankings. So, I want to see as high a number as possible since it really amounts to a lose-one-game pass to start out high.

The only sucky part is that no team that started out of the top 10 in the preseason polls has ever made it into the national championship game

BSU, Cal & Utah all top 20. Will make us look good by winning all 3 the 1st month.

Probably explains why the SEC coaches rallied to poke LSU up there after being unranked last season.

As far as I'm concerned, these early polls are just for speculation. I'm not sure about having a team like Mississippi up there or even Cal at #12.

Yeah that's not even close to true.

See numbers 4 and 5

Edit: ohhhh my bad, I misread your post. I thought it said no time that started IN the top 10... Whoops

Since 1991, college football's national championship has come from outside the top 10 of the preseason Associated Press top 25 poll only four times -- Michigan was 14th in 1997, Oklahoma was 19th in 2000, Ohio State was 13th in 2002 and LSU was 14th in 2003.

During the last 20 seasons, 13 teams have lost a game and still managed to finish the regular season ranked in the top two in the BCS standings or either poll of record. But only one of those teams -- LSU in 2003 -- was ranked lower than eighth in the preseason poll.

I am sure nobody needs reminding that the Ducks were well on their way in 2007 if it were not for Dixon's injury.
