Costa...

For everyone that hates Masoli this week, I would like to point out a couple of things:

1. Last season, with our offense already struggling a ton, we had an even worse passing performance in a league game vs UCLA (which we still won) but seemed to learn from it and our passing offense dramatically improved, I think Masoli was our QB?

2. I like and believe in Nate Costa. I think he is a good player too. He has had pretty miserable luck with the knee situation. He still won't play with the starter's unless Masoli drastically fails to improve his passing or gets hurt, based directly on the how things began and ended last year.

3. Masoli will improve, a lot, very quickly, + this is a completely different and new team offensively fwiw. Going back to fundamental (set feet & square shoulders) passing + calming down a bit in the pocket should do it.

The minute our offense looks good again, everyone is going to go right back to gargling his balls and wanting heisman billboards.

Costa won't get a chance because of reason #1 stated above, its just the simple truth. If he does see the field I have full confidence in him. If he was a "better" choice in the coaches eyes (who see everything) Why was he wearing a baseball hat on the sidelines for the majority of the game that we couldn't pass in? We were desperate enough to bust Thomas's redshirt last year for just 1 quarter of potential passing vs boise, the position is not Fort Knox... Masoli is good, the coaches know it, and he's just off to a rough start. Considering all the pre-season hype, a new group of offensive players, LGB suspension and overall bed-shiting in boise this year maybe has him to feeling a bit squirrely....

Please calm down, support your team, and the same quarterback that was sensational for the 2nd half of last season.

Your points are valid. While Masoli should absolutely be the starter against Cal, I think this is a make or break game for him. Since football is a fairly short season, each game means a ton. If Masoli struggles with the passing game again, that would already be 1/3 of the season in which he hasn't done well. That's a pretty significant amount of time.

So when is the breaking point that you would consider putting
Costa in the game?? Losing to Cal losing a couple in a row or losing
3 of the next 4??? I am a firm believer that if Masoli doesn't play
a lot better against Cal it's time to make a change. CK has a lot
vested in Masoli thus no change yet. IE: sports ill. cover, heisman
talk etc.

That will be the big question when will enough be enough. Win the game you get everybody off your back but lose and play poorly again and its time to open things back up. Not a good week to get it together though cal is 2nd in the pac at stopping the run at 67 yards a game and has a preseason all american secondary but against shoddy opponents. We have the home field and cal is not a great away team but this is a huge game. Lose and its four years in a row and we love to recruit nor cal kids.

Chip needs to step it up, the play calling has been poor and basic and its time to add some new wrinkles. Zone option isnt that hard to stop when you cant throw. Cal is going to fill the box and blitz a lot i imagine so we need to run more screens and throw deep to stretch the field and open up some running lanes. Receivers need to step it up too Holland has been a ghost from everything we heard during spring and summer and maehl cant get it done all by himself. We need to move the pocket more imo as well, if Masoli isnt comfortable in there then we need to give him easy reads and throws to get him going. no excuses after this week big players make big plays in big games it time to step it up...

I don't know why this has to cause a fight among duck fans. I haven't heard anyone hear say they hate Masoli. I think it's only logical to be concerned about the qb position after the first 3 games. Masoli has to make the plays against Cal, or I think it will be time for a change the following week.

I'm all for Masoli starting the game ...

What I dislike is that Masoli seems guaranteed the starting spot, regardless of how well he plays. Costa should have had a few snaps in the BSU game when the offense was sputtering, Purdue might have been too close for swapping QBs, and against Utah, I think Costa should have had a series or two in the second half ...

I don't think too many Duck fans actually want to see Costa start against Cal. (A new QB against their defense is obviously a bad idea). But it's frustrating to think that 25% of the season has passed, Masoli still looks terrible and now we're heading into conference play without having investigated our other options to the smallest degree. If Masoli doesn't get it together this game, we could be in for trouble.

Its kind of like he is starting all over again from last year, and his results are super comparable to the first part of last season. Yes it's been a few games (all vs decent/good teams too) but I think people are seriously underestimating the number of new offensive players we have out there that aren't really helping the cause.

Someone made a great point about Holland being a ghost, which is true. Especially after all the spring/fall accolades he got for "fixing" his attitude or whatever. Now I read that he's posting negative stuff on facebook or something, definitely not a true duck manuever. Maehl hasn't impressed either. None of our receivers have, perhaps some blame should be on them as well. Also, 3 new lineman & and a couple injuries, although they have done a decent job, they clearly have work to do. So Masoli even with his happy feet is not single handedly screwing our offense... If anything, I think the coaching staff needs to do a lot better job of helping the players help themselves.
