Victory Vaka
Saw a tweet from one of his former teachers who said that she was proud of Victory and he has said when he was a kid that all he wants to do is play for Oregon.

This is a position of need, but will have to wait for 2021.

Not gonna lie, I thought Victory Vaka was some kind of Polynesian dance when I read the title. But dang, this is a good looking prospect. Hopefully 2021 has more of those big dudes.

Not sure if we're still in on him, but he lists us in his top 5 and we could sure use someone to replace FatMac if Ika doesn't come.

Hopefully that’s cause they’re confident they’ll get someone better. But that seems unlikely.lukeyrid13 wrote:Coaches don’t want him apparently

Re: Victory Vaka
dropped by A&M, no offer from Ducks. His film isn't great.
Spot is reserved for Ika or JTT and if not then open.
Remember, we all wish that there were scholarships not given to some on the roster. (those that were added at the end classes to fill a class). In the old days, we needed those players. With how well the Ducks recruit now (and with the new transfer portal), I am of the belief that those unfilled should be left open for other other opportunities.

Not that we love to focus on it, but the APR is also important and getting guys who finish their degrees should be more than just a token goal of the coaching staff.jimmy12 wrote:dropped by A&M, no offer from Ducks. His film isn't great.

Re: Victory Vaka
I think this kid tried to commit to Oregon in the spring and was then told no or maybe later and tweeted something passive aggressive and unfollowed a bunch of Oregon stuff.
He looks slow. 350 pounds and slow. We have enough lead footed guys on this defense.
On APR: the last two Helf classes, Willie’s fill up the class with whatever is available, and then Cristobal’s bad situation of having to flesh out a class in December after Willie’s dream job opened up has become a thing where there is both dead weight and a lot of guys gone without graduating.
The APR might become a real problem for Dana Altman. That’s the risk in basketball in getting top recruits who either leave for the pros or transfer for playing time after a year. Kentucky and Duke have figured out this issue, they bring in a few guys who aren’t good enough to be players for them, but happy for the opportunity to ride the pine for four years, get some garbage time and rings, and graduate. Technically they do contribute, to the APR.

absolutely agree. Look at the 2018 class. Obviously it has a VERY high end with Penei and Holland. Several TBDs Tyler, Stevens, Jones, Jackson, Dye, Webb & McKinley and then a LOT of fall off. The last 2 classes don't seem (again TBD) to have this large amount of fall off or "wasted offers."

2018 certainly impacts the now; but if one wants to look at recruiting class UGLY ... 2015 has to take the cake.
Coming off several successful seasons, 2015 just ends up remarkably bad.

About the only good thing in the 2015 class was the Oline, other than that it was pretty booty.

Without looking, I'm going to guess this is the Darrian Franklin class?OrTDuck wrote:2018 certainly impacts the now; but if one wants to look at recruiting class UGLY ... 2015 has to take the cake.

Edit: Franklin class was 2016. That class was feast or famine, whereas I think 2015 was the opposite - some flameouts, but lots of contributors. Oregon recruited a whole starting OL in that '15 class, which is amazing (I'm hoping that happens with this year's class). Ugo was an all-timer. Breeland was an injury away from being an all-timer. Gary Baker and Drayton Carlberg played a lot of snaps on the DL. Jonah Moi would start on this year's team at LB. Sadly, Apelu might, as well. And Cumberlander was contributing there at the end of his career.

Re: Victory Vaka
I suppose everyone who follows recruiting (at least) semi-closely has their own little way of looking back on classes. To me, 2015 just is what you don't want to see; and, obviously led to a number of the holes that popped up in the Herbert era.
First off, the top 7 recruits (the "bread and butter" recruits one hopes anchor a class) were all busts, 0-7, with probably the biggest Duck recruiting bust in 30 years (Kaumatule):
C. Kaumatule - 17
T. Griffin - 53
T. Jonsen - 102
A. Ofodile - 120
M. Lovette - 132
K. Merritt - 170
Z. Okun - 234
Obviously, Lemieux, Throck, Hanson, and Breeland probably exceeding expectations - saves something with the class (Aiello also was a strong back-up/contributor as well).
Carlberg and Cumberlander "developmental types" that were hits - and developed. Amadi (414) a very solid DB, and Apelu obviously a guy who filled in when there wasn't a lot left in the cupboard.
Names like Leiato, Stewart, Baker, Manu, Moi, Bostick, Mariota Jr., Kane all guys who were hoped to develop to solid contributors (if not solid Pac-12 level starting players) at some point who, for whatever reason, probably didn't quite develop has hoped on signing day.
24 kids and a #16 national ranking?
No QBs, no RBs, no WRs, one TE (and even then 18.5 catches per year over 4 seasons/26 highest), two DL who were contributors as Jrs. and excellent finally as seniors, one LB when the program was about out, and a S. Best case? Maybe a bit over half of what is expected out of regular class? The strike-outs at the top being especially notable.
