Oregon has received yet another defensive commitment, this time from 4* 2023 Edge Blake Purchase. He's now the third edge rusher they've gotten in this class.

Well from the Jr Year HL he looks to have a solid lower body in his movements and frame for playing as a standup Edge. Arms look a little skinny but frankly he shows a pretty good awareness level both in pass coverage and keeping his hands up as well as not over-pursuing or taking bad angles as the backside defender in the run game (but again, HL) . Apparently he has put on some weight and kept his speed but I think he looks best suited as someone you could play outside in Base/Run Defense but also transition inside when the D shifts to Nickel due to what he's shown in coverage. He's got above average burst off the los and due to so many coverage HL I'd use him as a situational rusher unless he really flashed at it since finding LBs that can stay on the field in passing downs is harder to find. Certainly nothing on that film shows any glaring deficiency and he seems to have some solid upside if he can keep getting stronger.

Purchase is now the 5th 2023 commit who's the top 247Sports ranked recruit in their state, joining Moore, Presley, Sadiq, and Tuioti.

I’m a neophyte when it comes to recruiting rules and regs. Is this normal? Being allowed to show coaches direct recruiting pitches? Did this have to go through compliance, or the UO to ok it? Sorry for my ignorance, just have never seen a direct pitch to a recruit.

I wasn’t sure of the recruiting regulation on that, so I searched through the NCAA bylaws and didn’t find anything forbidding it. I’ve also seen it before; some kid showed a video made of his video call with Nick Saban, and some former UFC/MMA fighter posted a video of Cristobal (when he was Oregon’s coach) making a verbal scholarship offer to his son - a QB. A little different since the coaches may have been unaware their recruiting pitches would be posted, but I don’t see a difference between that or the recruits posting their official written offers.

The NCAA does have a big section on not having printed materials, as those have value unlike a digital copy - which is outdated and also a result of Bellotti’s comic book page-by-page recruiting tactic from back in the day.
