Are these athletes who are looking for and signing NIL deals allowed to hire an agent or “attorney” to help navigate contracts? I haven’t seen anything about it and went back a few pages on this thread and either missed it or it hasn’t been discussed.

Not sure if it still applies, but typically signing an agent makes them ineligible to play in the ncaa. I'm pretty sure that might still be the case, since there are players that will declare for the draft, but not sign an agent until they get an idea of where/if they'll be selected

I think what the OP is asking isn't whether players can literally hire agents, but whether they can hire attorneys to handle their complex NIL deals. Attorneys are not technically agents, but in this case there may be overlapping functions. Perhaps the difference is that attorneys are not directly soliciting teams for their clients' services, which would make agents allowable. Definitely seems like another classic gray area though.

You can hire an "NIL Agent". NIL agents can only represent NIL deals and must not be a pro sport agent. Any state may also put their own restrictions on NIL Agents and can require licencing and or registration.

In addition you can hire a non-agent attorney to look over both the NIL deals and the NIL Agency contract. ie you can hire a lawyer to see that your NIL Agent is acting in compliance to NCAA and state regulations.

Thanks GrandpaDuck. I was hoping they would allow someone to at least look over the contracts, to many snakes in the pit that would bite these young men in the ass just to make a few more bucks off them, or screw them out of money they’ve earned.

I'd love to see the NCAA try to claim in court they have the right to deprive a Student-Athlete of legal counsel.
