Time to get a new OL coach

I understand coach Lanning taking a risk on a young coach, but it's clearly not working out in terms of recruiting and development. We have been forced to play a weak walk-on at center and talented guys like Poncho and Ajani have not improved. Pass blocking form is poor.

Even worse, the guys he's recruited have all been pretty bad. His talent eval has been bad.

Clearly Coach Terry is in over his head.

Not much can come out of firing a position coach after week 1 but if the Oline does not drastically improve then yes you are 100% right. I don’t think people realized that the Oline wasn’t very good last year either, tackles were fine (what happened to Cornelius today?) but our guards weren’t good. Bucky made them look good with his ability to turn 3 yard runs into 12 yard runs but when he was injured and couldn’t do that the interior run game was mostly stuffed against the Beavs and Huskies, and for a good chunk of the game against USC. At least the tackles gave Bo time, something Gabriel didn’t have today. The one weakness to the overall good recruiting was OLine, so it shouldn’t be surprising that it’s also the weakness on the team this year if they don’t drastically improve.

Only prep guy he's brought in who plays is Poncho and he's a legacy.

Cornelius has regressed in his time at Oregon.

Just not good.

O-line recruiting can’t just be pinned on Terry. The OC has to be heavily involved as well. Being that both have been with UO less than 2 years, you have to consider the previous coaches as well. Most high school O-line players take some time to adapt to the college level. Not a sound argument, at least in the little time the current coaches have been in Eugene. Now, if you are talking about player evaluations transferring into UO, and not performing, that is a good argument.

He’s been here for 1 recruiting cycle. There aren’t a lot of true freshmen that play significant minutes on OL. Might want to temper those expectations some.

I agree that it's probably way too early to make a coaching change, but it's worth noting that former OSU OL coach Mike Cavanaugh is on staff as an analyst. If there is anyone who can help a young OL coach really fix things and get better, it's probably him (which is why I think Lanning probably brought him in).

Ultimately the person who decided not to go after OL depth in the transfer portal is the one who should be sweating (although, even then, if there weren't solid guys available in the portal, standing pat might still be defensible). It's hard to say if that's the OL coach, the OC or the head coach--or someone within the AD/football program who has responsibilities we don't necessarily know about.

Maybe our salary cap was 21M$?

Probably the worst OL showing we’ve seen in years.

Not only did they now hit the portal hard enough but they have whiffed on almost every OLine recruit as well with what seemed like very little to no backup plan. I think how the OLine is being run currently does need to be completely re-evaluated, cause not only as you pointed out roster management seems to have fallen short, the OLine play was sloppy and not cohesive last night, they seemed extremely unprepared.

Naaa, relax. Sure, it was a bad showing, but I've never trusted a coach more. Lanning will get it worked out. Don't panic.

Worst since 2021 vs Utah, twice.

I don’t remember many OL recruits talking about the OC helping out, when we had Greatwood doing the recruiting. Terry needs to figure it out ASAP, or we move on.

Greatwood was largely finding diamonds in the rough and developing them over the years. Guys weren’t being expected to start their true freshman year, as apparently Terry’s are, since that’s all he’s had the chance to recruit. It seems he’s being judged for not being able to reel in 5 star guys, when the Ducks have always had trouble doing that on the OL.

We also haven’t even seen the starting OL that’s expected this year. They had Poncho playing an entirely different position, due to Iuli and Bedford not being available. So, in a sense you’re missing 2 starters at their position. Could be an entirely different dynamic once one or both of those guys are back.

Its way too early to call for Terry's head. If things aren't better by the end of this year or next year, I'm sure DL will be the first to fire him or let him go.

Also, I don't think the OL's performance last year is an accurate indication of Terry's abilities. Those guys weren't Terry's recruits and coaching/development. The jury is still out on Terry. Let's give the guy a chance and see what he can do with a healthy OL of his own recruits and coaching/development.
