3-0 UNLV, which has a very real chance of making the playoffs, will be without their starting quarterback after he says NIL promises have not been kept.

Frankly I'm of the mindset that his lack of specific's leads me to believe that whatever he's alluding to likely wasn't a legit deal.

The way it's supposed to work is that the schools still can't outright say we will pay you this much on top of your scholarship but they can direct you to their NIL collective. If I'm missing more vital context then please let me know but all of that is to say that I'm actually tending to side towards UNLV on this unless more comes out.

We're not that far now from players essentially extorting schools on a game to game basis. Between that, the racketeering of the networks with their streaming packages and the NFL being an entertainment league and not a sports league, I'm finding myself more involved in the HS levels this year than in years past.

I hear what you're saying, and Damien Martinez at OSU might be an example of that (there was believable pushback by the collective saying they'd fulfilled their obligations).

In this particular case and somewhat broadly, "pay for play" is still punishable. As such, I think a player has to be vague because their eligibility is at stake if they too much. Reality is we'll probably never know the specifics, but it does seem at least as credible as anyone else that Sluka is in the right and is being somewhat courageous by not taking it lying down. (Or he's an over-entitled brat who re-negotiated since they're having success, who knows).

Update: (From an article on ESPN)

"Sluka's agent, Marcus Cromartie, told ESPN that UNLV didn't come through on a verbal offer of $100,000 from an assistant coach. The quarterback's father, Bob Sluka, told ESPN that head coach Barry Odom later said in a phone conversation that the offer wasn't valid because it didn't come from him, but rather from offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, who declined comment to ESPN."

Certainly looks like a bit of both where someone at UNLV likely made a promise of money that Sluka as an adult had full responsibility to follow through with per NIL rules. I wouldn't be shocked at all if the coaches at schools tell some kids higher numbers than what the collective is willing to pay as a means of getting them to the signing table with a lower offer. If you have an agent to represent you, even less of an argument about your deal because they too have a responsibility to know the rules related to NIL so that you receive what you agreed to.

If you didn't get it in writing well that makes you kind of stupid; almost like being a football team in the midst of an undefeated season that now has to deal with this drama over 100 grand.

Lord knows that our collective will use it to our advantage in showcasing that our offers are the most legit (which is so pathetic in that it naturally implies so many others aren't legit).

We could probably get Congress to question Odom and Sluka faster than the NCAA can to actually get to the bottom of it.

This reminds me of an article in The Athletic earlier this year in which they interviewed several blue chip prospects about the biggest factors in their college choices. Money was a big factor, but not the biggest. The quality of a program's NIL operation was just as vital as the dollar amount. This would explain Oregon's recent recruiting successes & what we've heard about the quality of Division Street and its NIL offers not always being the biggest.

Brennan Marion, who gained acclaim at Pitt when they had Kenny Pickett and a star studded offense, is at the center of this as the OC who made the verbal offer. Marion could stand to lose a lot of money along with reputation because he is likely in line for some big time OC positions, but this looks bad.

College football is completely a different world. I miss the old game but it ain’t ever coming back.

Not a whole lot different than the NFL except way more open ends with college NIL.

Instead of an NFL Trade Deadline we get the NCAA Red-Shirt Deadline, lol.

Not surprising when it comes to Alexander. It's why a bunch of schools shied away from him when he went into the portal (outside of the fact that he was already a done deal to SC before entering). He's always had character issues, and never been one to put in the work. SC was desperate enough to give it a go, in case he actually matured a bit.

Ha! It’s so true though! As a fan, you only know you locked in a player when he gets that 5th game under his belt.

Just saw a UW linebacker is doing this too.

Is this a matter of NIL collectives not coming through, or is this athletes trying to hold schools/collectives hostage for more money midseason?

I think the uw linebacker is sitting out due to playing time, not NIL. He's an all-Mountain West, fringe-NFL player. Think he just doesn't see himself getting drafted after this year and wants another crack.
