"He played tight end on Oregon's 1958 Rose Bowl championship team before beginning his coaching career with the Ducks."

Was also friends and teammates with John Madden here. Our history is deeper than most casual's know.

"Oregon came into the Rose Bowl having just lost its Civil War rivalry game to Oregon State, which put the two teams into a tie for the Pacific Coast Conference championship. Normally, Oregon State would have gone to the Rose Bowl with the head-to-head victory; however, Oregon State had appeared in the 1957 Rose Bowl a year earlier, and the PCC had a no-repeat rule."

Kind of karma for UDUMB screwing over the Ducks years before and voting against the ducks going to the Rose bowl, IMHO.

There’s a bit of history between the University of Washington and the University of Oregon when it comes to football. One notable incident occurred in the 1948 season. The Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) had a rule that the team with the best conference record would go to the Rose Bowl. That year, Oregon and California both finished with identical conference records. The PCC held a vote to decide which team would go to the Rose Bowl, and the University of Washington voted against Oregon, which led to California being selected.

This decision was controversial and has been remembered as a significant moment in the rivalry between the two schools. It’s a fascinating piece of college football history that shows how deep and intense these rivalries can be.
