Caldwell, Savage, and Silva get extra year

Post by StevensTechU »

Quick version: Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia, who spent two years at a JUCO, sued the NCAA for extra eligibility because not allowing him four years (+ a redshirt) of NCAA-sanctioned football would hurt his earnings capacity* (corrected based on posts below). A judge ruled in his favor, giving him at least one more year. Now, the NCAA D1 board has decided that all other would-be seniors in the class of 2024-25 will now have an extra year of eligibility if they exhausted some of that eligibility as junior college players.

Current Ducks seniors Jamaree Caldwell (DT), Kobe Savage S), and George Silva (OT) were all in junior colleges and exhausted a year that they now will get back.

I haven’t read anything related to this case being Covid related. It’s always been framed around NIL limitations due to not getting full access to eligibility at the D1 level.

This would also pertain to recent transfer addition OL Alex Harkey.

You're totally right. This is the problem with trying to follow something via social media instead of actual journalistic sources.

I thought it was an attempt at parity due to covid, but instead as you pointed out, it's an attempt to avoid lawsuits for a year while figuring out what the long-term plan is.

My two cents- the Tennessee judge's ruling is completely stupid. Saying Pavia's NIL opportunity was harmed because he played two years of post-high school football at a lower level and that he should be allowed to play an infinite number of years of ball as long as it's not in the NCAA without becoming ineligible is utterly ridiculous.

Caldwell has accepted a Senior Bowl invite. I suppose he could rescind but it will be interesting to see what Savage decides or if he waits until the season is over to decide.

From one of the brief articles I read at the time the judgement happened, I recall the Judge essentially calling out the NCAA for the "student" side of the student-athlete as it related to JuCo players being able to transfer credits among other things. There was a specific phrase that was used by the NCAA and the Judge accepted Pavia's argument that it was a hypocritical situation for the NCAA to put the players into.

Absolutely. The Covid argument would completely make sense. Hopefully revenue sharing and some sort of player unionization will put an end to a lot of this.

Any reason, or could you see the NCAA possibly appeal?

This decision to grant a blanket extra year to seniors who went to JUCO is a sign that they don't intend to act quickly (like an immediate appeal). I read it as they want to formulate a proposal that might withstand future lawsuits.

As was mentioned, Caldwell is already off to the Senior Bowl. I think he's off to the NFL unless someone breaks out the checkbook and makes an offer too good to refuse.

Savage is the biggest question mark for me. He might have a shot at an NFL roster as an undrafted guy. Oregon seemingly already went out and got his replacement in Thieneman. Maybe they could play them in a complimentary capacity, like Savage and Tysheem Johnson have this year, but it really seems like an overlap in skillsets. Seems his best option would be to find the highest bidder elsewhere, but maybe he comes back.

Silva is in a similar boat as Savage, just not going to be as popular in the portal. He's a darn good athlete, but only people in the building know how good he is or isn't.

George Silva: “If I can come back, I will come back for sure because I thought this was going to be my last year. If I can get another year that’ll be a blessing for me.”

Caldwell said he wouldn't rule out coming back for another year.

Good thing he didn't progress and acquire skills needed to play at the D1 level while in Juco. He could have went straight to a D-1 school that had 3-4 good QB's in the pipeline and never saw the field until maybe his senior year. Utter Ridiculousness.

Kobe Savage announced he's going to go to the NFL. Given the timing, it seems pretty clear he at least considered playing another year with the Ducks or another college team. I really thought the former All-Big 12 player would take the guaranteed check in college instead of the longer shot of getting one in the NFL, but I really hope he makes it happen.

Makes me think he talked with Coach and, with all the influx in secondary talent coming in, knew a starting role would not be guaranteed.
