VB HC Matt Ulmer leaving for Kansas
Oregon volleyball has lost HC Matt Ulmer to Kansas. No one saw him leaving a Big Ten program to go to the Big 12. It's a potential massive loss given how tough the Big Ten is and the players who could leave without him anymore.

Yeah that's a blow for the program that had been on the rise. Is he a Midwestern guy?

He went to college in Wisconsin if I remember right. Not sure where he was at a younger age.
Big loss. Total guess, but maybe a money thing like Mike White? Softball hasn't recovered yet.

Oregon's top player, Mimi Colyer, has now transferred to Wisconsin. Going to be really tough replacing her. It may be a few years before Oregon VB is competing at a high level again even if they get a top-notch replacement.

Oregon is also losing Noemie Glover. They'll currently only have 3 returning players who played in over 90 sets this past fall. Another blow for the program.

Oregon lost even more players as Mia Tvardy, Sophia Gregoire, Colby Neal, and Cristin Cline have all entered the portal. Roster is currently at 5 players (normal roster is around 14-18 players) and I imagine any signees will be free to look at other schools. 4 of the 5 left are Oregonians.

So how much of this is a money issue (I read he was making around 275K this year with a contract that had 4 years left on it) and how much of it is a travel issue from being in the B1G?

Re: VB HC Matt Ulmer leaving for Kansas
According to recent transfer Mimi Colyer, it sounds like Oregon was going to be reducing support for the program, which resulted in the mass exodus.

Plus, Ulmer left for a variety of reasons, mainly closer to family, dedicated VB facilities and easier to recruit. He also got a $100K+ raise.

Another data point that Oregon does not have a blank check from Phil Knight.

But with football, MBB, and T&F, they're certainly going to get whatever they want/need.StevensTechU wrote: Wed Jan 22, 2025 5:30 pm Another data point that Oregon does not have a blank check from Phil Knight.

Well at least at Kansas Coach Ulmer will make more than the starting QB does at his new school. Probably irks some of these coaches in non-revenue sports somehow.

Our track and field recruiting is far from elite.greenyellow wrote: Wed Jan 22, 2025 10:43 pmBut with football, MBB, and T&F, they're certainly going to get whatever they want/need.StevensTechU wrote: Wed Jan 22, 2025 5:30 pm Another data point that Oregon does not have a blank check from Phil Knight.

You obviously don't follow T & F! Our recruiting the last few years for both men and women is elite! This is only a small sample!

Re: VB HC Matt Ulmer leaving for Kansas
Yea, to be fair, since they effectively stopped having home meets I've stopped paying as close attention. But that aside, our track and field recruiting - not distance running exclusively, and definitely not just women's - seems as though it hasn't been great for much of the last ten years. Maybe that's feel more than reality due to local stars choosing to go elsewhere, like many going to uw over the Ducks. Do you have recruiting rankings handy for more than 2024?TheDrake wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2025 2:13 pmStevensTechU wrote: Thu Jan 23, 2025 12:37 pmOur track and field recruiting is far from elite.greenyellow wrote: Wed Jan 22, 2025 10:43 pmBut with football, MBB, and T&F, they're certainly going to get whatever they want/need.StevensTechU wrote: Wed Jan 22, 2025 5:30 pm Another data point that Oregon does not have a blank check from Phil Knight.
