Will Stein taking interviews, per Canzano

Interesting tidbit in today's John Canzano post (might be behind a paywall).

I don't want to repost the content, but he says he was told that Will Stein interviewed for Oregon State's head coaching position. I'm not surprised that Will Stein is talking to other schools about head coaching positions, but if he's actively taking interviews then I hope he remains focused on the task at hand.

Also, Oregon State? That would seem like such a bizarre move for someone who's allegedly one of the best OCs in the Power 4.

As I recall from the radio show, Jim Mora, Paul Chryst and the Alabama OC are the Top 3 choices for OSU.

After that it becomes the Montana St HC, the NDSU HC as the next tier and then it was Will Stein, Tosh Lupoi and another I can't recall. By all accounts it sounded like it was more about taking an interview than it was a serious overture.

I was just going to say- not a bizarre move in my mind to potentially go to OSU when even there he's the fifth or sixth option.

IMHO that would be a mistake. OSU has lost so much talent, need facility upgrades and no longer have the old Pac-12 money, so they're trying to rebuild on a much smaller budget.

I think he'd be better off waiting for another AAC school opening or maybe even an FBS opening. Somewhere where he'd actually have a chance to succeed. The grass is definitely NOT greener in Corvallis.

I would think that taking the Oregon state job could potentially be a massive mistaken for a first time head coach. Inevitably failing there could set him back

Oregon State doesn't seem to be the dead end to me that it apparently does to others. Within the new Pac-12, where do they rank in financial support? Stadium and facilities? Access to talent? Fan support? Brand recognition? Even if you're a hater, it's a top half of the conference job. If you're not a hater, it's top 1-2-3, which translates as a place that you can win 7+ games regularly.

According to the QB11 Show this week, it sounds like both Stein and Lupoi have interviewed for jobs this month. QB11 said it wouldn't surprise him if Tosh takes a job while Stein stays since Tosh's options are tad more limited and Stein can afford to hold out for better jobs, especially if he were to return for another year and get Dante to being a Heisman finalist in 2026.

I could see Tosh taking the HC job at Cal (and maybe Wilcox or Bob Gregory coming to Oregon as co-DC/LBs to replace him?) and Stein staying here for another year.

It seems like Lanning pumps Tosh up in interviews all the time as if he was trying to help him get a job. I wonder how big of a loss he would be if he left.

I’d be good with Wilcox on staff as a DC or Co-DC. I would only be worried about recruiting chops. Tosh is a recruiting guru, Wilcox not so much.

Why would any of those guys take the OSU job? Literally zero chance Grubb really wants it. It’s good to get experience interviewing for jobs, but no serious coach will go there. They should just hire one of Michael Vick or DeSean Jackson, and become Colorado 2.0

Well… should Stein leave, a really good OC just hit the market.

Make it happen, Dan!

If you're refering to chip, no thanks. He doesn't recruit, and had said he doesn't like it. His offenses haven't been nearly in the same level since he left Oregon either. Teams have learned how to defend the read option much better now. As you can see from his short stint with Raiders, when the talent level is equal, his offense struggles.

I’ll push back a little. The Raiders have been ravaged by injuries. Their OL is down several guys, Bowers was out about half the year, they traded away Adams, and Geno Smith is, at best, a league-average QB. It’s generous to call the competition even.

It also seems he and Carroll haven’t been on the same page since game 2.

And Kelly won a championship with Will Howard at QB.

The recruiting part, I get, but I don’t think he’s out of gas.

Saw that Chip was available! Man, that would be perfect. He won a natty in his first season back as a pure college football OC.
