Tosh to Cal as HC per Skopil

Post by bdkipe »

Skopil said Tosh is going to be named Cal’s HC this week. Looks like a few sources on X are confirming it, none of them seem very legit or sourced.

Dan’s a pretty genuine guy so when he was asked about endorsing Tosh earlier this week you can tell from his body language and reply that he knows Tosh was their choice and he probably gave him the blessing.

I appreciate Tosh and what he did for us. I think we trash on him way too much and I think a lot of that comes from him being Tedford’s fall-guy for the fake injuries in 2010.

This year’s D was ELITE. Last year’s was good and elite at times.

If it is true, I thank the man for everything and I wish him luck at his Alma mater.

Should be a great opportunity for Coach Hamp to become our DC next season.

For Tosh personally, happy for him, getting to be a college HC at your alma mater is awesome and he's really grinded for years.

For Oregon, I think it hurts recruiting a bit, but I think Hamp can potentially be an upgrade with play calling.

It'll be interesting to see who Tosh takes from Oregon with him. Can't imagine it'll be many. It'll likely be a few interns/analysts/GAs who are getting job upgrades. Heard some writers/podcasters think people like Mehringer or Tuioti could head to Cal with job title bumps to OC and DC.

For Tosh's replacement on staff as co-DC/LBs, the names that stand out to me as fits would be Justin Wilcox and Bob Gregory. Both have been DCs in a major conference and both have ties to Oregon. Would seem to be an easy fit for either one of them into the staff, with Hampton stepping up as the DC and playcaller.

There could be a few bottom of the depth chart guys who could see more reps at Cal who'd leave but I don't think we'd lose any top of the roster players.

I'll be curious to see how Dan and Tosh want to wrap up their time together considering how Dan transitioned from Georgia to Oregon.

I'd be more concerned about any recruits that Tosh might have ties to.

No good recruit is going to Cal over UO. Not concerned at all about losing Tosh. I respect Tosh,
But Cal isn’t a serious football school.

Lanning's transition is a good model, especially compared to Kiffin's. I think that he continued as Georgia's DC through the NC game, but I think he was also doing staff recruitment and worked at retaining current players and recruits for Oregon. Basically working two jobs. I don't recall any conflicts or hard feelings. Hard to do it here due to propinquity. For example, Tosh is going to have to battle to keep JKS, and Oregon would be a logical suitor.

Early signing day is more of a thing now than it was 4 years ago (first early signing day was in December 2017). As much as I want Tosh to stay, I would understand if he has to fully commit to Cal and put together/salvage an early signing day class. Since Lanning is a defensive minded coach, hopefully we'll be ok for the playoff run.

It does suck to lose a coordinator but I also have a lot of faith in Hampton, in fact I think there’s a chance Hampton turns out to be a better DC than Tosh and we see better defensive performances going forward, but even if that comes to fruition I’ll always be grateful for Tosh.

Not so much following him to Cal, but going to another school. It's no secret that players often commit to coaches while they're at a school they like, but not necessarily the school itself. A player that likes Tosh, but isn't high on Cal, might look at their second option instead.

Wilcox and Bob Gregory are hardly good fits for Oregon. I'm sure Dan has far better choices.

Sounds like the deal is being finalized now and we should see updates soon. Gosh sucks to lose both of our coordinators right before the playoffs.

Lupoi's deal closing soon is no surprise as the State of California's rule about public positions needing to be posted for 10 days before a hire is made ends either tonight or tomorrow morning. Also, as expected, Chris Hampton will be the next DC.

I'm mostly curious about the staff and players who go to Cal and Kentucky. Both Stein and Tosh will need coordinators. I could see Novosad and Moga getting a look from Stein at Kentucky. There are probably up-and-comers who could get more immediate playing time by going to one of those spots, as well. Time will tell.
