question from a recruiting non expert

So to my untrained eye it looks like Oregon has a really good class, except for interior D lineman. Is that correct? Maybe linebacker could be better? Curious what the experts have to say on this. Thanks in advance

Not much of an expert, but i can say that Oregon has struggled to recruit d-line for the past few seasons. Lanning seems to rely heavily on the transfer portal to fill those holes. Whether that's by design or necessity, only he really knows. It does seem like their are more quality d-lineman in the portal than there are other defensive positions, so it hasn't really been a major issue yet. As for linebacker, I'm not quite sure what's going on there. While the product hasn't been horrible, it has been somewhat underwhelming

Oregon had a deep DL built through HS recruiting so they didn't need as many DL for a couple cycles. But now that they actually need DL, it's strange they couldn't attract any for the 2027 class with both their starters graduating after this upcoming season.

Only thing I can guess is some negative recruiting from other schools, but that's a total guess. Maybe seeing that some of our young guys haven't gotten many opportunities to play a lot the last few years because we've brought in transfers.
But that's just a total guess.

A’mauri Washington should be an example that you can come in and develop under this coaching staff and become a star at Oregon. If anything I think the issue is kids wanting to play right away and are avoiding working their way into a starter role. I understand Green and Grey leaving so they wouldn’t be backups again, but seeing guys like Jericho Johnson transfer was dumb as they were in line to play significantly more snaps in 2026 and start in 2027. So many high school recruits just want a guarantee they’ll play right away and that’s a poor way to decide on a school and players like Dante and Dylan are proof of that.

I’m not too worried about the DL though, still got some talent and that’s one of those positions that always has quality players in the portal. I could see Matthew Johnson and Aydin Breland being stars in 2027 and some quality transfer guys fill in the gaps.
