Looks as if Cal is going to reinstate 5 sports teams that were facing elimination this season. Included is the baseball team, which probably means Oregon won't get any possible transfers now that they may still have a team.

Who did we get? I thought that since they aren't getting rid of any sports, none of the players will be transferring due to no longer having a sports team.

Unless I'm mistaken ('tis possible), the player in question was LHP Justin Jones, a freshman All American who said he was looking at us and USC, and would transfer after the Spring term. Since he never left school and baseball has been reinstated, he's still a Golden Bear. He's listed on Cal's 2011 roster.

I text a Golden Bear friend of mine to see if Justin Jones was indeed the transfer in question, and he said that the article about baseball NOT getting the axe was misreported by Comcast Bay Area. Apparently 3 of the 5 cut sports are returning, but baseball is INDEED getting cut?

We'll definitely be getting a couple players from Cal now. I think that a bulk of them will go to schools in the UC or Cal State school systems.

If we take transfers from Cal - or any other program - how does this affect the thinking of some of our incoming recruits?

Granted, competition is what makes a team better, and I know Coach H wouldn't promise anybody a starting spot sight unseen, but some recruits sign with certain teams based on depth chart opportunities. Does this betray a trust between coach and player?

Thanks unfortunate that Cal is cutting baseball. I would not be too pleased if I were a Berkeley fan.

They have immediate eligibility since having no team is deemed a hardship case.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe baseball transfers can play immediately, hardship or not.

Every NCAA athlete transferring between D1 schools has to sit out a year, unless they have a degree already or receive a hardship waiver, which in the case of Cal's players, having no team is that hardship.
