Draft Watch 93

Post by Zyme »

Out with the old, and in with the new, Draftwatch rolls on. There is so much to talk about, international and nationally, there is so little time to do so. Might as well get right into it.

Shaq is declaring for the draft! Not surprising as the LSU senior has been dominating the competition all year. While he was good last year, he looks absoutly ripped this year. He has left audiences blown away by his physical tools and his powerful moves down on the the low block. While Alonzo looked good last year and is proving it in the association, Shaq is making that season look pedestrian. In non-conference play he is averaging a staggering 25/8/8. Granted the competition has not been that great but if he can even stay in the high teens and around five blocks, where will be little question who goes first in this year's draft. It has been a long time since a play with his low post skills came along.

Question: Hill was in the 94 draft, Shaq was in 92, right now it's 93. How do we know who else will be in this draft class in this league?

While Shaq may be the most expected center in the draft, there is another big man who has had a growing air of expectancy. Shawn Bradley, a Freshman out of Brigham Young University has looked every bit the part of the next great thing. While Shaq looks to slam it home, not since Dekembe has a player looked so good on the defensive side of the ball and Bradely even has a solid set of post moves to compliment. So far, as we approach the end of non-conference play, the german/american has looked every bit like one of the top prospects in the country. He really has come slowly, but at 7'6", it is hard not to notice him. Despite his skills, he really shies from the lime light and if it were not for his outstanding play, is it likely he would be taking up the cloth. His LDS faith plays a big part and he has yet to perform a mission trip, a key function of his beliefs. Potentially, he could be missing either a training camp or even longer.

Kentucky has been doing the Monster Mash all season long. Jamaal Mashburn has been one of the most polished options in the post for the wildcats this season. The junior has averages over twenty-five points and nine rebounds so far this season, and has lead the Wildcats to a top five ranking behind Michigan, Memphis State, Cincinnati, and Indiana. He has a good jumper for a forward, but his post moves have looked outstanding. Against the weaker non-conference competition, he simply dominated his matchups putting up a godly .615 shooting percentage. While it has been dropping as the SEC sechedule enters full swing, he is still around .550. Truly, one to keep an eye out for should he leave early.

With the trade deadline having passed, players have gotten their names settled and into the draft. Until then, we doe have the international entrant list:

Antoine Rigaudeau, G/F, 6-6, 225, France, age 22
Kornel David, F, 6-9, 235, Hungary, Age 22
Marcelo Nicola, F/C, 6-10, 225, Argentina, Age 22

Nothing exceptional this year, but always interesting flavour entering the league from overseas.

In the early entrant watch, we are casting a close eye on Michigan. With the wolverines having an exceptional season, going wire to wire as the #1 team and now a #1 seed. Webber seems happier than he has ever been.

Penny Hardiway, however has had probably the worst season of his career. While he has looked so promising in previous seasons, he has looked downright poor and his Junior year has been a big step back. While most think that if he had come out after a very solid sophomor year, he would have been a lottery pick. But as it stands, the scuttlebud is he may be looking to go back and try to improve his draft stock as as 11/5 season shooting .380 in conference play isn't oging to cut it.
