10 Important Trades that Shaped the League
Figured I'd go through the league's trades and look at some pivotal trades that have led us to where we are now. If I didn't include a trade you made, it probably wasn't that important
Nets-Bulls
#1 (Isiah Thomas) for #5 (Larry Nance) and Sidney Moncrief
http://www.ducksattack.com/forum/viewto ... 27&t=34858
Probably the first head-turning deal we saw in the league. Isiah is still with the Bulls, however, Nance bailed on the Nets after his rookie deal, and Moncrief didn't develop as expected.
Sixers-Magic
Reggie Theus for 1st
http://www.ducksattack.com/forum/viewto ... 27&t=35012
Sixers got a sidekick for Moses, which paid off a few seasons later. Magic have yet to acquire a player as good as Theus despite the lure of DisneyWorld.
Cavs-Jazz
Trent Tucker+picks for Robert Parish
http://www.ducksattack.com/forum/viewto ... 27&t=35122
Funny how neither of these guys are with the teams that traded for them. Cavs were able to rebuild quickly (with some good lotto luck) and the Jazz moved on from Parish after several years of falling short in the playoffs.
Pacers-Mavs
2 firsts (Patrick Ewing) for Phil Ford
http://www.ducksattack.com/forum/viewto ... 27&t=35179
Pacers tried to maximize Kareem's last few seasons, but was the price worth it?
Lakers-Celtics
Lakers trade for Larry Bird
http://www.ducksattack.com/forum/viewto ... 27&t=35245
Well, we won't be building a statue of Bird anytime soon, but trading for him to pair with Dominique signaled that the Lakers were serious about winning. Shame it didn't work out for Bird who was sidelined while the team won a ring without him. Celtics ended up with Byron Scott, a budding superstar, so everybody wins?
Pacers-Grizzlies
1 first (Drazen Petrovic) for John Drew
http://www.ducksattack.com/forum/viewto ... 27&t=35271
Unlucky for the Pacers. I guess giving up back-to-back first picks is a small price to pay for 3 straight finals.
Blazers-Sonics
The pick that became MJ
http://www.ducksattack.com/forum/viewto ... 27&t=35522
Poor Clippers. Fell out of the playoffs on the last sim, get lucky in the lotto, but can only watch as Michael Jordan went to Portland.
Lakers-Blazers
Practically nothing for the goat Darrell Griffith
http://www.ducksattack.com/forum/viewto ... 27&t=35306
Yea so this is probably the greatest trade of all time.
Blazers-Suns
Dr. J teams up with MJ
http://www.ducksattack.com/forum/viewto ... 27&t=36234
End of an era in Phoenix, and potentially the beginning of something special in Portland. Now if only the Blazers could keep their players in free agency...
Rockets-Jazz
Parish to H-Town for a buttload of picks
http://www.ducksattack.com/forum/viewto ... 27&t=36143
Rockets cashed in their future for big Bob in the middle. For now, they're title contenders, but those picks could turn out pretty juicy for the Jazz.
Honorable Mentions:
Celtics-Hawks
Celtics trade 3874901 picks to move up in the draft
http://www.ducksattack.com/forum/viewto ... 27&t=36230
A recent big trade whose fallout remains to be seen.
Any of the Kevin McHale trades
4 teams in the last 4 seasons. Call him Mr. Worldwide.
Did I miss anything?

Damn it was either Blazers or the Hornets getting that pick lol I would rather have given it to the rebuilding Blazers

No one else wanted Griffith.
He had been a 15-16ppg player and then absolutely blew up that next TC. Oh well

I still can't believe the Nets traded out of Isiah Thomas.
Also, even though the Pacers got unlucky winning the lottery twice (lol), at least they went for it. Some teams seem stuck in a perpetual rebuild.
No gamble, no future.

Especially when the league was so devoid of PG play at that time.the goat wrote:I still can't believe the Nets traded out of Isiah Thomas.

I might throw in the Raptors/Cavs deal. Steve Johnson for...not much. Turned the Cavs from plucky young team to title contenders.

Yea I was kind of on the fence for this one. It was a steal of a trade but I didn't want the whole list to be 3 teamsCraig wrote:I might throw in the Raptors/Cavs deal. Steve Johnson for...not much. Turned the Cavs from plucky young team to title contenders.
Definitely an important trade tho

3 straight finals, and an injury away from a repeat championship.UOducksTK1 wrote:Pacers are gonna free fall on my next GM rankings, ouch.
I'll be back in a few seasons. I'll take the championship I won and the two finals runs I made over playing it safe like most of these other GM's.

Huh? You traded for Ford after two appearances. Trading him for top picks was a bad trade.dennocj wrote:3 straight finals, and an injury away from a repeat championship.UOducksTK1 wrote:Pacers are gonna free fall on my next GM rankings, ouch.

You could have made 3 finals and kept your top picks in the future. Ford had nothing to do with that.

Re: 10 Important Trades that Shaped the League
I understand what you're saying, but I had no chance to win another without upgrading my PG. At least that was how I looked at it. The trade that was dumb and in retrospect I shouldn't have done was the John Drew one.UOducksTK1 wrote:Huh? You traded for Ford after two appearances. Gotcha. Well you’re in a good position to reset and get back at the top in a few years
