Maybe I have a jaded point of view because im around the very worst people you could imagine every day, but the next time you want to call a cop a power hungy control freak. come to work with me and see what the cops protect you from.
First of all, I used to have a family member that was a k-9 police officer in meth-town city, Sprungfield, OR. I went on ride-alongs, they were actually a lot of fun. I respect most cops and the service they provide. But, they are PUBLIC-SERVANTS, they aren't supposed target good tax-paying citizens just because it's a slow time and they have a qouta to meet. You know how many chicken-crap tickets I've gotten from bored cops. A Beaverton Rookie, parked two blocks away to walk over and give me a $20 parking citation because the back end of my truck was 3 feet over a no park zone in the middle of the day. I actually caught him writing the ticket, explained my case, and learned that Beaverton has no 'yellow' marked sidewalks to indicate no parking. I respectfully requested he pass on the ticket, as I learned how to interpret the parking zone signage, but he delivered it anyways.
As in anything, there are good and bad apples. Usually one bad piece of fruit will ruin the crop, or at least the perception of it. However, the old saying, "Power Corrupts, Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely", is a universal truth. That's why there's a judicial system, checks and balances. Even that only gets it right 70% of the time. So our system is far from perfect, it's simply only the best thing we have right now.
