Mark Helfrich to be OC/QB coach?
That is the feeling that Moseley has (as stated by a Rivals poster), also Colorado fan base is stating that they have heard the same news on their side. I know he interviewed etc, but now it appears that this could be a deal.
Most of us think there is no doubt a better option out there available to us, but I for one will trust Chip's judgement on this as Azz, and Frost have been great additions so far.

Uggggggggggg.... Not the kind of news I wanted to hear regarding him. This is a guy who's offense placed last in the Big XII. Why do we want that. I trust Chip Kelly but come one lets least get somebody who has some merit.

While I don't think this would be the best hire its certainly not that bad. First off, what has he had to work with at CU? The coaches kid? Gimme a break. Secondly, have you seen what he did while QB coach at ASU? PRetty dang impressive.
We're hiring him to be a QB coach, right? Well it seems he's pretty good with QBs when he actually has something to work with:
"Under the guidance of Helfrich, Arizona State blossomed into one of the top passing teams in the country during his tenure in Tempe. In 2005, his final season there, the Sun Devils finished third in the NCAA and easily led the Pac-10 with 373.9 passing yards per game (over 50 better than runner-up USC). The school record 4,481 yards passing put the total number for Helfrich’s time as quarterbacks coach at ASU at 18,686 in 61 games, or an average of 306.3 yards per game. And that number increased to 321.7 in his 36 games as passing coordinator.
His quarterbacks put up numbers that ranked in the top three of the Pac-10 all five years he was there, leading the league twice (2004, 2005) and finishing second in 2001. His units also finished among the top 10 in the NCAA on three different occasions, as ASU was ranked fifth nationally in 2004 and ninth in 2002 before the school’s highest ever finish with the third place effort in ’05.
He developed quarterback Andrew Walter, the key player in ASU’s maturation as a passing team, as he set school records for both career (85) and single-season touchdowns (30) in addition to shattering the previous Pac-10 record for career touchdown passes, set by John Elway at Stanford (77). The only player in ASU history to tally 3,000 passing yards in a season, Walter did it for a third time in 2004 with a season total of 3,150 yards."

I'll trust Kelly on this for the time being. But I'll second-guess the hell out of it if our offense struggles

Re: Mark Helfrich to be OC/QB coach?
I wonder if he is coming in as QB coach to help attract some of the type of young men who have snubbed Oregon the last couple of years... His credentials as a pass guru aren't bad, and the rub with a lot of these young QBs (as well as WRs... ) is that Oregon is so focussed on running the ball.
I trust that CK will still see to it that the offense is still tailored to, "the personnel we have".
That certainly seemed to be how his HC handled things when he was at New Hampshire, and it was continued under Belloti.

I don't get this at all. If guys like Ludwig and Crowton weren't good enough, how is Helfrich going to do the job? I know everyone says to trust Kellly, but Helfrich didn't do much at Colorado and it's not like he would be coming to a weak pac-10 program.

CU's had massive injuries to the OL last year, and their WR core was down to 3 scholarship players. So I wouldn't judge him on the stats of a bad CU team.

Re: Mark Helfrich to be OC/QB coach?
I asked some CU fans about his recruiting abilities, they mentioned he was not much of a force on that end. So not much angle there.
I'm real curious in the fact that Walters and other QB's under Helfrich were not spread/option type QB's so I just wonder about him coaching that type of QB. Very interesting, wonder if there is some pressure to get MB off the squad and to full time AD duties pronto. ????

Re: Mark Helfrich to be OC/QB coach?
The only problem with giving Helfrich credit for the offensive success at Arizona State is that everyone knows Koetter was the guy actually running the offense. It is hard to determine how much credit Helfrich deserves, just like it would be hard to determine how much credit he deserves if he comes to Oregon since everyone knows it is Chip's offense.
I think it is pretty clear Helfrich wasn't Chip's first or second choice. He might not have even been his third or fourth choice, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will turn out to be a bad hire, although on the surface it doesn't excite me much. There is more to finding a good fit for a coaching staff than just looking at coaching bios. If you only looked at Azzinaro's bio, there wasn't much reason to get terribly excited about his hiring. The energy and enthusiasm he has brought to the program is something that goes well beyond his bio. If Helfrich is the guy, hopefully he will similarly bring something to the program that isn't apparent just from looking at his bio.

Right, but an offensive coordinator has a much bigger impact on a game than a defensive line coach. I would rather Kelly just call the plays.

I thinks it's pretty clear that Chip will be calling the plays, so for a guy who is already a OC to come to Oregon and give that up for 1-2 yrs means he is really wanting to learn from CK and learn the spread. That also would explain why CK has maybe or not, missed out on his first 2 choices. We may not find out what kind of OC he is until year 3, and by then he should have a good understaning of what CK want's to do with the offense.

lol. Let's be honest. Most of us are probably in this same boat.Tray Dub wrote:I'll trust Kelly on this for the time being. But I'll second-guess the hell out of it if our offense struggles
For all sorts of reasons, we will probably never hear Helfrich's explanation for his performance at CU. But, I'm pretty sure that Kelly will/has. Maybe there's some kind of chemistry issue with the rest of the staff? Just saying that it's possible that CU's offensive production doesn't necessarily reflect his coaching ability.
Really, with Chip Kelly heavily influencing the offense, we basically only need someone to teach mechanics to quarterbacks and clearly communicate what they are seeing from the booth. Anything more than that is icing on the cake.
