News about Duck Opponents
There was a post/section about news about Oregon opponents but I couldn't find it so I am posting a new one. This one is about Utah's QB situation and how good they are.
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/ncfnation/0- ... -have.html
One thing that stood out to me is :
"When Wynn arrived at Utah on Jan. 12 after graduating early from Oceanside High School, Whittingham said he weighed 153 pounds. At that point, Whittingham thought Wynn would probably need a year in the weight room and a diet adjustment before he was ready to face FBS competition.
But when Wynn weighed in this past Monday, Whittingham said he weighed 191 pounds.
"You talk about 38 pounds in a little over four months and it's good weight, he's done it the right way," Whittingham said. "He's lifted hard. He wasn't getting the right nutrition and stuff like that prior to coming here. So, he all of a sudden goes from a guy who's nowhere near ready to take the pounding of a Division I schedule to a guy that has made himself physically at least close to where he needs to be. And so the weight gain, combined with his performance on a daily basis, is what allowed him to close that gap."
That is a lot of weight in a short time. I guess it is possible but it could be the "juice" helping him, kinda like the LB from USC (his name escapes me)

Brian Cushing, ya he was on the roids. 38 pounds in 4 months can't happen unless he has some sort of birth defect where he can rapidly produce testosterone and protein. But if he did gain 38 pounds with just good old fashion hard work, than that is incredible.

Re: News about Duck Opponents
I gained roughly that much when I went to work as a young man as a saw filer (Yeah, I've done a lot of different jobs... My first job title there was 'hold-up man'. Try geting a bank loan with that job description!).
I went from 155 to 190.
I can't account for the nutrition end, but 8-10 hours of hard physical labor, 5-6 days a week, got me there in about 2 years, without lifting. My body comp wasn't so great (10-14 %), but with proper guidance and training, for some guys, it is probably possible.
The trick would be doing it in a manner that kept the bulk useable. A lot of guys build up fairly quick, but without the right training regimen, lose flexibility and/or speed while doing so.
Wynn will be one to watch. Since he did this under the tutelage of the traines, his developement could have been very targeted to his specific needs as a QB.

Where it looks like he might have used something illegal to help him gain those 38 pounds it isn't completely impossible. Going into my junior year of high school my head coach told me that if I wanted to start I needed to add what he called, "A considerable amount of weight". That summer I lifted twice a day and did work outs with weight vests and other things.. took two protein shakes and ate enough plain peanut butter sandwhiches to make me never want to taste peanut butter again, but I added about 25 pounds in 3 months. Its completely do able.. especially when your at a smaller weight. If the kid came from a home where he wasn't able to eat three meals a day and then he goes to somewhere where he can eat 5 healthy meals a day, then that will help him add plenty of weight easily. But since its easier to add plenty of weight at the start, if he makes another 38 lb jump next off season it will show if he's making these gains legally or illegally.

For true freshman coming in at 155 pounds this is nothing out of the realm of possibility. Anyway, if the true frosh comes in to Autzen as the the starter, we'll all be licking our chops.hermistonduck wrote:Where it looks like he might have used something illegal to help him gain those 38 pounds it isn't completely impossible. Big big difference between a true frosh and a Red Shirt Frosh especially at QB.

It's very hard to be good as a true freshman, just look at TP's struggles. Kellen Moore is of a rare breed and hopefully he goes through his sophmore slump.monster wrote:right, just like last year

Quizz considers last season simply a starting point to build upon.
“I feel like my first year is going to be my worst year here,” he said. “I did all that off of natural ability, not from college workouts or lifting weights. It took me a while to get used to the game speed at the college level. That’ll be a big difference. And I won’t be taking all them carries. I can break a long one next season.”

Re: News about Duck Opponents
Seems like a lot to me.
If he were a skinny, non-athlete to start with, I wouldn't stop to question. But, he was already recruited at the small weight, meaning that he must have been athletic to some degree already. I wouldn't say it's impossible. But, that is a lot of weight in such a short time.

Re: News about Duck Opponents
I think you guys are thinking of Clay Mathews. He was a walk on that came into the USC program weighing under 200 pounds. I know there were rumors that Cushing was a steriod user. But his scout profile has him weighing 227. I think alot of the issue with Cushing was he went from flabby to ripped from any given picture that was taken of him. Time will only tell with the both of them.
