BCS presidents reject Mountain West playoff plan

Bowl Championship Series presidents have rejected the Mountain West Conference’s playoff plan.

The MWC proposed an eight-team playoff system that would allow greater access to the national championship game to teams outside the six most powerful leagues. The BCS presidential oversight committee rejected the concept during a teleconference on Wednesday.

“There was no overall support for the proposal, although some conferences were interested in considering certain elements of it in the future— particularly those related to revenue, access and governance of the BCS arrangement,” said University of Oregon president David Frohnmayer, the outgoing committee chairman.

The big schools who almost always assured an automatic BCS bid worth millions of dollars (Ohio State, Oklahoma, Florida, USC, etc.) would lose out on a lot of money if that where to happen that is why there was little support for the idea.

I was kind of surprised by the comments from UO President, David Frohnmayer. Eventually, there's going to be a playoff. I'm just hoping that it's sooner rather than later.

It's strictly a business decision. Think about it, the vast majority if not all university presidents (at least major ones) oppose the idea because their schools would earn far less money from it. If the playoff somehow had a plan that could give the schools more money than the current bowl system then they'd be all for it. But with the economy the way it is I very highly doubt it happens soon.

The BCS or should we say the Bs is all about protecting the big name schools. They are too afraid that the small schools that rise to greatness occasionally will take away their money. Somebody mentioned schools like USc.. we can not forget schools like Notre Dame who only have to win 9 games and guaranteed a BCS game. Who can blame Notre Dame to schedule mostly patsies just so can get to a BCS game.. something they have not won in over a decade. I like the bowl system a lot and hope it stays around. I also though want to see maybe the season extended to where there is a 4 or 8 team playoff. The bowl games have always been a part of college football and something most of us enjoy thoroughly. Truthfully when it comes to the BCS they brought this all upon themselves.

In all honesty i dont see how they could possibly lose money by switching to a playoff format, and the bcs consistently gives us a champion that hardly anyone agrees with let alone a good game. The only people that would be affected by this is the fans having to travel and get tickets on short notice and the players playing a possible 3 extra games. 3 national televised games makes a lot more money than one imo.

Keep the stupid bcs we'll live with their 8 for now. I would play 4 games a week after the season is over winners advance to play in two weeks losers fill two of the bcs games in january. Two weeks later we get the semis winners advance to play 2nd week of january for championship losers play in last available bcs game for 3rd place. This way we get our playoffs, we get a true champion decided on the field not in a computer lab and the bowl system remains in tact so all those 6-6 teams that win four games againt mac and sunbelt teams still get paid and the fans get to watch 6 meaningful games in december. i dont see how this cant happen the only sport not decided by a playoff series is rediculous.

The Notre Dame factor is going to be interesting; If they manage to creep into qualifying status and bump out a nonBCS powerhouse the uproar to dismanlte the system will be huge. The format will be challenged under anti-trust provisions and tied up in court for years.

Any of the jilted brides could challenge the format, I am not savvy enough in law matters but I wonder if a potential injunction under emergency provisions could befiled to halt the bowl games completely.

With the 5 bowl game format, what does ND have to obtain to qualify?

Lets face it.....Notre Dame needs to play in an actual league and obtain rights to attend bowl games the same was as any other school has to do....THAT is the only fair way for ND to be involved...Otherwise, F them and F the ......Well, no need to offend the Catholics....

Under the new BCS arrangement Notre Dame will be guaranteed one of the at-large slots in a BCS bowl if it is ranked No. 8 or better in the final BCS standings. It is also guaranteed annual payment for its participation in the BCS. In those seasons in which the Irish play in a BCS bowl game, the school will receive $4.5 million (an amount equivalent to that received by a conference that places a second team in a BCS bowl). In those seasons in which Notre Dame does not play in a BCS bowl game, it is projected to be paid $1.3 million for its participation in the BCS arrangement.

If Notre Dame fails to get into a BCS game, the deserve to earn more money than the split received by, say, the non-qualifying PAC-10 schools... After all, It's their divine right!

Charlie Weis and Notre Dame are a joke! Notre Dame hasn't done anything this decade and didn't do much in the 90's

Well currently, some team from the PAC-10 other than USC needs to smack em' around; key word is current. That would be a big plus to the leagues image.
