Masoli
What are people's thoughts on Masoli? Where is the fault in this game? Play calling/game plan, the O-line, Blount's inability to run, The WR's inability to catch, or Masoli's decision making and inaccurate passing? My personal thoughts are all of the above, the O-line didn't open holes for anyone or give Masoli time to throw, Blount flat out stunk and it seems his success last season was due to JJ wearing down the defense, the play calling was probably the worst I have ever seen, there were a few drops, so it seems the WR's still don't have good hands, particularly Maehl, and Masoli's decision making and passing was overall terrible. Hopefully next week we see a lot of Barner and LMJ and more read option with Masoli running and use of the speed the Ducks have with Holland, etc. If we are going to pass more then I think we need to give Costa an opportunity to see if he can pass better than Masoli. At least put him in for a few plays to see what he can do. So much for Masoli or Blount for Heisman....... neither one stepped up and they both talked crap about Boise State, Masoli now needs to step up.

Re: Masoli
I think everything you mentioned. SOme was play calling. The O-line was trash. They got zero push on run plays and the tackles are like molasses against the speed rush. Masoli never looked anybody off and he made horrible reads in the option. The defense was the only bright spot.

Re: Masoli
O-line sucked, Chip Kelly did a horrible job calling plays and preparing his team. Screw the Samurai flags, if this keeps up, Bellotti will come back..
Masoli is a good qb, but it looked like he was a true frosh back there all over again. Totally unprepared.

Not to jump to conclusions because it is only one game but Kelly may not be cut out to be a head coach. Hopefully that is not the case and things turnaround and the Ducks get back to running an efficient high powered offense, but let's say the Ducks do this every game how long does Kelly stay? Would Chris Peterson be a good fit in Oregon? He sure knows how to game plan that's for sure!!!

LMAO...might be a little too early for this talk. HAHA. If the offense got any kind of a push in the run block and Masoli makes one or two different reads and this game goes completely different. This season hinges upon the line at this point. The line played HORRIBLE.gofightingducks wrote:Not to jump to conclusions because it is only one game but Kelly may not be cut out to be a head coach. I agree the O-line was terrible, it will be interesting to see how things play out. There will probably be a lot of adjusting, rotating players and moving them around. As bad as the O-line was though the play calling really didn't offer much of an opportunity for success for the Ducks so I sure hope Chip gets it together and calls better games. If the Ducks lost simply because of lack of execution and not terrible play calling I would be more upset at the players but nothing in the play calling I saw remotely resembled what was successful for the Ducks last season so I put the blame on this loss mostly on the coaches, particularly Kelly/Helfrich, whoever called the plays.

Re: Masoli
Who's call was that 4th n 1 up the middle run? Who's call was a lateral run in the end zone for a safety?
= Chip
Who's bad reads on the zone read option?
= Masoli
Who's bad blocking gave Masoli no time to make his second and third check down reads to throw to when #1 was covered?
= O-Line
Who didn't have his team prepared?
= Chip

You can pin this lose on only one person, and that is Chip Kelly. The team played with no emotion, execution, or discipline. He is the person responsible for getting the team ready to play and sadly his first impression is as bad as it gets.

Re: Masoli
I wonder how much of Masoli's poor performance was due to not getting as much time in the film room one on one with Chip??

Re: Masoli
to me Masoli looked just like he did in the cal game last year. He was trying to win the game by himself.. And as far as him not ever getting rattled that's b.s. After about he 4th bad through and drop to Maehl then the drop and holding by Holland you could see it on his face. he was shaken.

Re: Masoli
He gets shaken up under pressure (as seen in Cal and USC games). When he truly shined was in OSU and the OSU Bowl game where it really wasn't as bad. He can't stand in the pocket and throw while pressured and he panicked too much. We got rid of our one guy who was a dedicated gamer (Roper) and we decided to forgo on someone with more experience in the system (Costa) so Masoli is the guy so far. People say he has regressed, I say the rest of the team stepped it up last season and covered for him. Since he's our 1st QB, hope Kelly can get him up to snuff and fast or else we're going to be in for a long season of Beaver smack...

Re: Masoli
I think there were two problems:
1. He was no threat to run. Not sure if it was the play calling or no holes, but he wasn't.
2. Almost all his throws were up the sidelines. Why no crossing routes, and why the BLEEP didn't Dickson get the ball more? It seemed like he only looked at Maehl. It seems like short little 5 yard outs would have opened up the deep strikes better.
Blame Chip or not, but it is his first game as head coach, on the road, against a much better team than I thought. Now if they play like this against the Huskies and Cougs, then my tune might change. But right now, give him some time to make the necessary adjustments.

Re: Masoli
First let me start off by saying that he really finished the season strong last year and definitely should have been the starter going into this season. With that being said, I have never really gotten the "it" factor with him like I have with a lot of the Oregon qb's in the past. Good teams just don't have qb's that are on one week and off the next. I've always thought Darron Thomas was the future of this team. I guess we will find out in a year or two. All I have to say is that there was no excuse for Masoli's poor performance, and if he starts to struggle against Purdue then Costa should come in.

Realy? Everyone jumping off the Masoli bandwaggon like it's on fire? So can I expect you to say that Masoli is a Greek God whom can do no wrong after a redeeming performance against Purdue? Let's not take the next train to panicville this soon please.
