The most striking development was the way the Ducks used their defensive ends, particularly junior Kenny Rowe. Rowe alternated between putting his hand on the ground as an end or standing up like an outside linebacker, allowing the Ducks to employ both 4-3 and 3-4 fronts depending on the formations BSU fielded.
The Ducks employed their base 4-3 front, with four down linemen and three linebackers, but used as few as two linemen in certain situations. In the past, Oregon used substitutes when switching from one formation to another, but that wasn’t the case at Boise.
Interesting side story at the bottom
A handful of Ducks were spotted during the Boise State game sporting helmet eyeshields manufactured by Oakley, a taboo move for the Nike-sponsored program.
Paysinger was one, and acknowledged receiving a stern rebuke from Kelly this week.
“It was my mistake,” Paysinger said. “It will never happen again.”
Some of the shields appeared slightly tinted, which would be in violation of NCAA rules and can result in a penalty.
