Yeah on paper, like you said, this is probably the best coaching staff we've ever had.

So is Hoke not making any changes to any of our positional coaches?

I doubt it, since it sounds like the hang up with Nolan was he wanted one of the coaches gone, so he could bring his own guy in.

Of course, if Hoke struggles at all, I have to wonder what people are going to start calling him.

Hoke job?

Brady Choke?

Or maybe just "Choke?"

Hopefully we never need to find out. Here's to an exciting future and possibly the end of the bend-but-don't break era of Oregon football.

I respect that. We've got a staff that has shown it can really develop players. The scheme has been a problem (and more recently the technique of our linebackers). Hokefully we've found a fix for the scheme without giving up a good position coach.

Nice. Like it so much I'm plagiarizing. "HOKEFULLY" we'll be able to stop opposing teams on 3rd and short with this one-gap D

I'd say that in the next 5-10 years, if Helf is still around, he's likely going to have to replace at least half the current staff due to retirements.
Based on some reporting of Helfrich's recent remarks by M. Prehm (sp) over on 247 I've got a different theory on this - admittedly pure speculation on my part.

Helfrich apparently remarked that the defensive staff was now set and that after the Spring install of Hoke's new defensive scheme they will decide whether any changes needed to be made (not specifically a reference to staff changes, but not specifically excluding the idea of staff changes either).

I don't think Pellum does the honorable thing and voluntarily steps away from the program after NSD. I think Hoke and the staff will evaluate how Pellum works/fits with Hoke's style/philosophy after Spring and decide whether Pellum stays or Hoke wants to bring in a new LB assistant.

Either way it will be billed as him retiring. Zero chance we admittedly fire him.

He's asking if it's okie vs coke. But like others have mentioned, it's the later.
Just FYI, it's spelled latter.

I fail to see why Pellum resigning is somehow a required act of seppeku necessary to cleanse the defense. If they didn't want him there, they would have simply fired him. They didn't. Certainly Hoke has the right to change that if he sees fit, but I'll wait for that to actually happen before calling for the disembowelment.

Well, Coach Pellum is the living embodiment of the Peter Principle. He was ultimately promoted to the level of his own incompetence. Failing miserably. Imagine working for 23 years in a two department business. After your department head leaves the company you are promoted into an environment where nothing changes - same people, budget, product, and support. Pellum couldn't even manage the relatively medicore standard set by Allioti.

Now Hoke comes onboard without any of his own staff. And the players' old DC is still part of the team while the defense undertakes a fundamental schematic change. Could it work out? Sure. Could Hoke name five qualified and available D1 LB coaches without looking at his phone. Probably. So why the apparent allegiance to Pellum?

We'll never know whether Pellum offered his resignation, but he certainly should have. If he did, and it wasn't accepted, that's different.

Oregon doesn't owe Pellum anything after 23 years. In fact, it is very much the other way around, imo.

I have to applaud everyone here. Agree with the hiring or not, no one is bad mouthing Hoke or Helf here, unlike other sites where the trolls are out in force.

Me personally, I'm excited about the hiring and I think it's going to show next year. When you look at Hokes D, generally they improve a yard a play from the previous year, and in his second year they improve around another yard. If that holds true, we should have at least one conference title in the next two years, and a possible playoff appearance.

Disagree with this line of thinking.

Not all middle managers are cut out to be department managers, and you don't fire good middle managers just because they're not made to be department managers -- especially when dealing with such a fantastic employee who completely buys into the company. Pellum has been a good position coach for years, and he's had some great linebacker groups. He was our DC for just two years, and we figured out (relatively quickly) that he wasn't cut out for that management role. He knows how to coach linebackers, but he doesn't know how to coach and coordinate an entire defense. So... let him go back to coaching linebackers.

Seriously, the biggest hangup here would be the demoted person's pride. A lot of people wouldn't be able to handle being demoted in such a high-profile position. But if Pellum has no problem with it, then others shouldn't either.

Pellum has already served the UofO honorably, and our team benefits greatly with him on the staff. He doesn't owe anything to anyone.

And yes, while the UofO has certainly taken good care of him, that's totally a two-way street.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe you are both saying the same thing.

Our 2010/11 linebackers were really good. And probably a squad or two back in the Harrington era. I'll give you that. But Pellum started Hardrick for the last two years and LBs have been arguably the worst performing defensive unit on the team for awhile. So we're gonna disagree about Pellum's record as the LB coach.

I suppose my larger point about demoting Pellum and keeping him on staff is that we are bringing in a new boss for the defense and keeping the rest of the staff intact. Does that send a strong enough signal to the team that things actually are going to change on the defensive side of the ball other than the X's and O's? The defense has problems that transcend schemes. Recall the ex-Utah player tweeting about Oregon being soft? Our defense is soft. And its not on Pellum alone that A. Springs doesn't want to tackle TCU's third string quarterback to at least try to keep him out of the end zone. It's a mindset issue. But Pellum utterly failed to bring new life and energy to the defense. Will sending Pellum back to the LBs miraculously invigorate them?

The only new defensive coach for Spring ball will be Hoke. Can Hoke, by himself, change the mentality of the defense? I hope so.

Agree that Pellum has served UO honorably and is a good man. But Oregon is the only employer he's ever had - professionally speaking. Also, not sure why you think Pellum's feelings are the determining factor in the argument. Seems to me like we are missing the opportunity to show the team the seriousness about changing the defense by finding a talented ex-NFL linebacker with some coaching experience to bring some heat into Hoke's new regime. Program could probably save a bunch of money as well.
