Its time for Thomas...

Post by xautzenx »

I am not one to overreact, but I think our coaching staff needs to seriously consider a QB change. Masoli through three games is simply not getting the job done. While some will point to his rushing stats, and say how valuable he is there, we need him to throw, we don't need another RB. We will lose to Cal by 30 unless Masoli gets it together this weekend. I do not think turning to Costa will make much of a difference as he will still struggle at seeing over the middle, and he has been away from the game for so long, rust will be inevitable.

One of my thoughts is perhaps Masoli faced dramatically weaker coverage last season due to teams loading up and focusing on stopping our dominant Running Backs. While James has shown promise, he and Barner are no where near the threat that Johnson and Blount posed. Teams have realized they don't need as many people in the box to stop our run as before.

I would hate to lose a year of eligibility for Thomas but if this team has a QB that can throw we may be looking at 3-0 and a top 10 ranking heading into this weekend.

Thoughts??

Did you watch the Spring Game, the practices during fall camp and any of the scrimmages during fall camp? There weren't many signs the passing game would be better with Thomas at the controls. He was less successful throwing the ball than both Masoli and Costa in each of the aforementioned situations.

Spring game means nothing to me, I watched the 07 spring game, and Dixon looked awful, thought 07 was going to be a continuation of his 06 struggles, then he comes out and is a stud.

I am not saying Thomas will come in and dominate, but I know he can see the field better than Masoli. I think it might be worth a shot.

The improvement that Thomas, Costa, you or me could make in three games is about a million times greater than what Masoli has shown. That's one thing if you're so good that you just can't improve much, but clearly Masoli doesn't have that problem.

Here is a thought for ya. Dont be dumb! Thomas is another two years until he is ready. Masoli is the starter for the season unless an injury occurs. Bringing Costa or Thomas in will only cause the offense to take 3 giant steps back. Here is a thought for everyone. Maybe yesterdays play calling, especially in the second half, was to make sure they have all of the basic plays down. If an offense cant run its basic offense. Well then it wont be able to add all the gimics that make it so explosive. And also, maybe they wanted to save plays for next week. And not give Cal anymore playbook then they have to.

I am tired of seeing QB's in Thomas' class such as Jordan Jefferson and Jacory Harris, whom DT was rated high then, have great seasons so far.
DT has it and I am on his wagon, have been since BSU last year.
Just step back and think about how long of a year its going to be if all we can run is tailback up the middle....

i have not liked the playcalling at all this year either... Where is the option and the pro back set with motion to set it up?
Where is the screen pass? Screen brings the dbs up which opens the deep routes later. It has seemed like all we do is the zone read every play pretty much, not sure if we're saving the playbook but we've been in tight games so maybe we should open it up some more. Maybe its cause the oline is still young and limited or maybe masoli just can throw but this is not the offense chip brought to eugene in 07. i know masoli is the leader of our offense and it might hurt us taking him out but we need to light a fire under him now. I would like to see Thomas redshirt saved this season but if hes looking good in practice and its an open competition like Chip said it was maybe its time to try something new. That being said i think Masoli should start on saturday but Costa at least needs to play the second half against WSU the week after because we need to see if he can still play.

Costa would get the start over Thomas if things fell through w/ Masoli. DT is being redshirted for a reason, why waste it on this year when he'll be starting with a veteran O-Line/WR core two years from now?

If this was even close to being an accurate statement I doubt we would have seen Roper &/or Kemp transfer. How quickly people on these boards jump from praise to condemnation of a player. I really believe the coaches know who to put on the field & when. As far as "you or me ", I doubt there is enough time in this life to improve "a million times greater than what Masoli has shown". I personally wouldn't care to be in his shoes. Does he have room to improve? Of course he does but so does the entire team - from kicking, hiking, passing, blocking, catching, ...., Is it time for Thomas you ask, No. We need to keep his red shirt if at all possible and not disrupt the progress this team is already making.

Were you asking this same question last season following one of Masoli's less than stellar passing performances? I think the season turned out pretty well....

This thread is ridiculous. People think they know everything about Thomas based on one quarter of football that took place over a year ago. Plus, he got really lucky on a bunch of his passes in that one quarter. Thomas hasn't played like our #1 in practice or in the opportunities he has gotten in the scrimmages. He still has major accuracy issues. He's got potential and talent, but that does NOT mean he's ready. Plus, I'd much rather exhaust all our other QB options before burning the kid's redshirt. IF it's time to bench Masoli, it's Costa who should/would step in.

If both Masoli and Costa were injured, does anyone think Hawkins would play over Thomas?

Masoli will be a senior next season, as will NC.
