Since Helfrich was probably the worst coach in the PAC 12, I'd bet Willie is an improvement. That said welcome to 7-8 wins every year, and hoping we beat UW every 4 years.

Helfrich had lost control of the team, and he had to go.

I don't know much about Taggart, but I do know he has a losing record and he'll be measured up against Shaw, Peterson, Anderson, Leach, McIntire, etc. I doubt he's in that league.

I think we're looking at several years of sustained mediocrity.

So who does he bring in for DC and OC. What coaches if any does he retain? Not Hoke, but maybe Lubick, Yost, Neal? Campbell, Greatwood?

Oregon just s*%t the bed and lost out on every good coach available and were forced to make a second tier hire. The entire Pac-12 is laughing they're asses off right now.

Actually, Taggart not only has recruiting ties in California, but also over much of the south - including Florida.

I have no doubt that he can coach. He's proven that by rebuilding Western Kentucky and USF. He's also considered to be a good recruiter. Still, regardless of those facts, it's going to take time to rebuild the defense both from a talent and depth standpoint. We need help across the board on that side of the ball.

Our offense should be very good right away.

We may have a couple 8-4/9-3 seasons before we get the players recruited and developed needed to succeed. Rebuilding the defense will take some time no matter who's at the helm.

Thankfully, from a scheduling standpoint we should have an advantage by avoiding USC and ASU the next two years and playing UCLA and Arizona instead.

Hope you're right but Chris Peterson owns the north now and Shaw is right behind him. Were basement PAC 12, no where to buy up I guess.

This is the guy who is going to lead the Ducks to the playoffs folks.

I like it as long as he hires great coaches around him. He is very very well regarded around the country. At least with him, we know we won't be stuck in mediocrity (I hope). It's a risk, though.

That being said, you don't burn down a 30+ year coaching dynasty, spend $15+ million on just coaches buyouts for a guy that isn't your first option and that you could've announced anytime for a week. I get a feeling they botched something up.

What are those ties? He's a southern guy with the exception of two years as a RB coach at Stanford.

As for the recruiting the south, yeah it'll be nice to have connections down there to pull a few guys but California is the lifeblood of this program. Color me underwhelmed but hopefully wrong.
