In trying to figure this out, the best I've found is this saying that 6 years ago the ncaa let the schools pay the cost for parents/guardians to travel with the recruit. The other option that's also likely is that one of the parents at Mater Dei is wealthy (this was the basis of the Matt Leinart-Steve Smith roommate "scandal" wherein Matt's dad paid for an expensive apartment that Smith's tuition check couldn't cover.)Proposal 2015-52 will allow institutions to pay the actual round-trip costs for a prospective student-athlete's parents or legal guardians to accompany the prospect on his official visit and will be implemented August 1, 2016.
