While I was initially pretty bummed about Moore de-commiting, after 24 hours, I think in the end, its a good thing. Austin WANTED to play at Oregon, Moore really didn't. Baylor is a good program, and he had an offer from Ohio St, so its not like we are the bridesmaid here, kid is a baller. I would rather have a kid here who WANTS to be here than a kid who just wants the spotlight on himself and will pick the school he think offers him that. While no disrespect to Moore, he's without a doubt a great high school football player and may very well be one the best in the nation I think its better for the Oregon program and the player if the kids actually WANTS to be here because he wants to be a Duck. So while on paper Moore may be a better player than Novosad, I give Austin 5* for playing for something bigger than himself, he is playing for the school first. That makes him a better player than Moore.

I don’t know how we can necessarily jump to the conclusion that Austin WANTED to play at Oregon. That would imply we were his number one choice from the beginning, yet he committed to Baylor. I think people undervalue the importance of relationships with recruits when it comes to the coaches. Dillingham leaving was a huge factor in Moore looking elsewhere and ultimately going to UCLA. I think it is naive to think these kids aren’t going somewhere where the relationship with coaches is strong and where they benefit the most for themselves, whether that’s NIL deals, playing time or a combination of both. I think the times of kids committing to schools based on the logo itself is few and far between now. Austin came to Oregon for his prior relationship with Stein first and foremost and I’m sure he will get a better NIL here than at Baylor.QuackininBama wrote:While I was initially pretty bummed about Moore de-commiting, after 24 hours, I think in the end, its a good thing. I also want a player that is willing to compete for the job rather than just expecting it from day one with no waiting period and no competition.QuackininBama wrote:While I was initially pretty bummed about Moore de-commiting, after 24 hours, I think in the end, its a good thing. Texas A&M, Ohio St and ND all made runs at him. And I’m sure all offered big NIL deals, bigger than what BU could. But he never waivers. UO came along and he flipped. I don’t think it was NIL that got him. It helped, but not the major reason.HomeSickDuck wrote:I don’t know how we can necessarily jump to the conclusion that Austin WANTED to play at Oregon. NIL+ Stein knowing him since 8th grade (as reported) really helped.

I think every recruit is different. In Austin's case, it felt that the relationship with stein since 8th grade was a huge factor for his flip. In Dante's case, his relationship with Dilly was only a few years. It was what secured his commitment and when Dilly left, it opened up his recruitment. If Dante significantly valued relationships, he would have followed Dilly to ASU, regardless of how bad ASU will be. With his recruitment still open, I think the nail in the coffin was when Nix announced he would be coming back for next year. Not too long after the Nix announcement, Dante announced his flip. The timing is coincidental. Dante was pretty nice in dropping the news a few days before signing day. It allowed us to open that spot we were holding for him, knowing that he could very well flip, and coordinate and communicate with Austin a few day before signing day.buckmarkduck wrote:Texas A&M, Ohio St and ND all made runs at him. As much as it sucks losing Dante, i think he handled the situation very well and flipped for good reasons that he felt were important to him. Perhaps he doesn't have helicopter parents and family like some recruits...

While I agree that relationships play a key role in recruiting, I would advise any kid to look beyond the coaches at what the program could do for them and their long-term goals. Coaches come and go. What are the odds that Coach Stein will be at Oregon in 4-5 years?HomeSickDuck wrote: I think people undervalue the importance of relationships with recruits when it comes to the coaches. I guess with the transfer portal a player can follow his coach around...

Definitely! A recruit should go to Stanford to get an education, scholarship, and play ball. A top recruit should go to a school offering stupid NIL money, given how few of the college kids make it to the NFL and of those, even fewer have multiple paycheck careers in the NFL.OregonDucks wrote:While I agree that relationships play a key role in recruiting, I would advise any kid to look beyond the coaches at what the program could do for them and their long-term goals.
