There were times when Picard and Strother played together and Poncho sat, it wasn't good. I'm wondering if it's more about Poncho's reading of defenses/making adjustments/communication with the line.StevensTechU wrote: Mon Sep 09, 2024 11:53 am Yea, my question is whether the same would've happened if you just swapped poncho and strother. I'll review later.

Sharing some thoughts from QB11 and Hythloday’s podcasts that came out today:
QB11:
-Defense is overall great, may not seem like it. Some gap assignment issues from the LB’s but that should be fixed.
-Pass defense is drastically improved and shut down BSU’s passing attack outside of 3 plays which included a scissors route (whatever that is) a great catch on a 50/50 ball, and a miscommunication between Jabar and Savage on a corner route. That won’t continue to happen.
-Dumb procedure penalties just seems to be part of this offense, it was last year, can’t expect it to magically go away. Something about the offense with the current coaching staff is resulting in badly time and drive killing procedure penalties.
-Receivers are amazing.
-Gabriel is struggling to read blitzes and have pocket presence and see downfield and react quickly, his accuracy is amazing but if he doesn’t clean up those small things that Bo happened to be incredible at it could cost Oregon a game. He mentioned a play where all four receivers on a play ran streaks and all were open but Gabriel didn’t get the ball to any of them.
-Biggest issue with Oline per QB11 was Poncho at G, that needs to stop. He said there isn’t a difference between Pickard and Poncho at C, Doug heavily disagreed and called out QB11 for have a Pickard bias and QB11 didn’t deny it, but Doug said the OLine is visibly better with Poncho at C over Pickard.
-Oline blocking is an issue, but they’re taking too much blame. Very little to no downfield blocking from the WR’s and the TE’s do not block at all. Also the RB’s are not picking up rushers and aren’t helping Gabriel. The entire team is falling way short with blocking.
-Team is talented, still could easily be a playoff team with time. He compared this team to last year with Texas Tech and Utah, said those were different teams. Still has hope we will see that type of improvement this season.
Hythloday takes:
-In his 15 years of analyzing film, he’s never seen individual OLineman get noticeably worse like he has with Conerly, Cornelius, and Harper. Their error rates are so high and they’re playing like first year starters. He’s only seen it before on teams when they change positions (like from guard to tackle) or a new offensive scheme, they have neither. He is completely flabbergasted by it and has no explanation.
-Stein’s playcalling deserves criticism, not getting the talented WR’s near enough opportunities. He relies on runs way too much and with Gabriel’s accuracy and the WR’s there’s no good reason for not taking more deep shots and being more aggressive with the passing game.
-Take out the dumb mistakes, this team actually has playoff level stats, the talent is there but the mistakes are so significant and frequent.
-Defense is actually really good, just a few bad plays, but he truly believes we won’t see an RB near as good as Jeanty and doesn’t expect to see LB’s having issues tackling. He thinks the gap issues will be fixed, not worried about the defense at all, just thinks Jeanty is a generational player and is that good.
-Mainly just is confused by the awful OLine play, didn’t bring up Terry this time, just has never seen anything like this before. Doesn’t think it is due to having a left handed QB, that wouldn’t explain it, he just simply does not have an explanation for why they’re as bad as they are and if we can expect them to improve.

I think people will naturally quickly point to Terry in regards to this. I guess my counterpoint is that they brought Mike Cavanaugh in as an analyst to help Terry. He has decades of experience coaching the OL, and as far as I can tell, is pretty well lauded in the industry. If Terry was doing a poor job of coaching the guys up, you'd think he'd be able to step in and help correct that. I'm still skeptical this is a Terry problem, as he coached them last year, as well, so why would they suddenly just regress now. I'm sure they'll continue to gel, and once they get the right rotations in there, we'll see everyone be a lot more comfortable.OregonFan4Life wrote: Wed Sep 11, 2024 3:04 pm

I am just relaying the info from the podcasts, and the reason I mentioned that Hythloday did NOT bring up Terry is cause last week he did.

While I think we can agree the the O line is struggling, I will also agree that the main thing I've noticed about Gabriel is that he does struggle to read the blitz. An all out blitz should be easy for him to read and easy to beat, but he failed at it nearly every time.OregonFan4Life wrote: Wed Sep 11, 2024 3:04 pm

Running backs and tight end blocking is also atrocious. The do very little if anything to stop a defender from getting to the quarterback, or getting into the backfield.
There's still a lot to cleanup on the offensive side, but it's all very fixable before Oregon gets to its hardest games of the season. Hopefully they can figure out before then.

Re: Boise State @ #6 Oregon (Sat 7 PM, Peacock)
I finally got around to grading out the offensive line for just the 3rd and 4th quarters, because I unfortunately don't have the time to see the whole game. What I saw in terms of second half performance was
Cornelius (top performer)
[Some dropoff]
Conerly
Strother
[some dropoff]
Poncho
[Big dropoff]
Harper
Pickard***
The asterisk on Pickard is that he played only 8 snaps in the second half so the bad snap affected his grade is a massive way. If that isn't his fault (like a DL causing the early snap but wasn't called, or something Gabriel did) he's actually in the same group as Conerly and Strother. I might go back and watch the first or second quarter and grade just Pickard so the sample is reasonable.
I was surprised Harper was so bad. He pulled on three plays and was late on every single one. Poncho continues to be the guy most likely to get moved backward due to lead feet. He graded out much better at center than guard. Strother had a decent second half but I think if I review more tape, his grade would come down, but that's somewhat conjecture because it's based on memory during the live game only.
Takeaways are that we have problems with the interior line, and aren't getting the all-american play at tackle we hoped for. Poncho should never play guard, and seems to be OK at center but take out every play in the playbook that requires the center to pull. Just not enough competition at those positions.

Not sure why anyone would be surprised with Harper struggling with a move to the right side after playing nothing but left guard for 3 years. I don’t understand what has happened with Poncho this year. He outplayed Steven Jones at guard when they rotated last year. He appears to be in better shape than last season but looks slow.StevensTechU wrote:I finally got around to grading out the offensive line for just the 3rd and 4th quarters, because I unfortunately don't have the time to see the whole game. Listening to this week's QB11 Show, he said that he's heard Poncho has been dealing with a knee injury that has limited his mobility and speed. If so, moving him to center would seem like a better move.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case because he was the most solid performer of the linemen against Idaho. Seems to indicate that the best line for now goes Conerly, Harper, Poncho, Strother/Bedford, Cornelius.webfoots2001 wrote: Wed Sep 11, 2024 7:02 pm Not sure why anyone would be surprised with Harper struggling with a move to the right side after playing nothing but left guard for 3 years. True, but all their games are really winnable up until Ohio State. If they can it put together and peak by then, the rest of the season should go relatively smoothnogerO wrote: Thu Sep 12, 2024 8:27 amIt feels like with this team that it's going to be the hardest game of the season is the next and next and next.squintsdd wrote: Wed Sep 11, 2024 4:51 pmWhile I think we can agree the the O line is struggling, I will also agree that the main thing I've noticed about Gabriel is that he does struggle to read the blitz. I also heard Strother prefers playing the other side than what he did against Boise, since he's more comfortable there. It seems we practice guys at many different positions, but it also doesn't seem to help.webfoots2001 wrote: Wed Sep 11, 2024 7:02 pmNot sure why anyone would be surprised with Harper struggling with a move to the right side after playing nothing but left guard for 3 years.
