CFP Quarterfinal Rose Bowl: Oregon vs Ohio State (Jan. 1, Wed 2 PM ESPN)

Just listened to QB11’s podcast, here are some notes from what he said:

-Oregon showed us their floor in the Idaho, Boise State, and Wisconsin games, and they came out with a similar performance today. Just disappointing they couldn’t at least make a competitive game today.
-Secondary just isn’t near good enough, we have 5’9” corners and safeties that run a 4.7. These guys were 3 stars out of high school and there’s a reason for that. They simply lack the talent/athleticism to stop Jeremiah Smith and the Ohio State receivers. They’ve been great all season but today they were awful and didn’t give themselves a chance.
-Oline was also awful and like the secondary simply isn’t good enough to win championships. He was skeptical of Cornelius and today showed he’s a bad tackle, maybe he’d be a good guard but he’s too slow to play tackle. Harper was also atrocious. We need to improve at OLine going forward.
-Oregon coaches got thoroughly outcoached which he didn’t expect.
-The game did show they need to improve, but the program is under the right trajectory under Lanning. They’re optimistic Oregon will get even better next year and it’s evident the young talent is developing and will lead the team next year by how few portal players they’re taking. He mentioned Aydin Breland had some snaps and when he played he was dominant, that’s a good sign going forward. He is also optimistic about the young receivers and secondary going forward.
-His two concerns for upcoming seasons are the OLine and not having a receiver who can go over the top. He said the two tackle transfers are got are simply not good enough, the coaches need to recruit better at OLine and keep those guys and develop them. He did mention that Adrian Klemm’s last recruiting class was atrocious and it’s showing. It may take a while to fix that position. He also said we have some good talent at receiver but he’s worried Oregon just has a bunch of possession and a lot receivers, not a deep threat. Hopefully a young guys emerges as a deep threat.

This game also reminded me of the Idaho game. It seemed like we found ways to mask a lot of the issues we saw early in the season but they were never actually fixed, and were totally exposed once again. Compare that to tOSU, who lost key guys on the OL, yet patched things up and fielded a dominant OL yesterday.

I’m not a fan of Terry and think next years OL is going to be even worse, barring some sort of miracle. We were fortunate using a small back like James as a battering ram all season because our interior line couldn’t get any push didn’t result in him getting hurt sooner. Recruiting and portal under him has been weak and I simply can’t unsee the OL play from the first few games to start the season. Just an inexcusable level of poor play and confusion amongst a veteran OL. The fact that it took Terry two games of starting Pickard, after spring and fall camp, to realize he had no business playing center scares me. And fans acting like an injury to a mediocre transfer G was the reason for our OL struggles is pure copium. We simply need much better talent acquisition and development on the OL.

I don’t buy the secondary excuse. QB11 always gets to have his cake and eat it too where he hypes up our talent all year then when we lose blames those same players for not being good enough. Last year it was all Evan Williams’ fault and yet he’s a starting as a rookie for the Packers. Not good enough for our secondary but good enough for the NFL? That doesn’t add up. The secondary players we’ve brought have been VERY good at their previous schools and somehow with a secondary full of all-conference safeties and DBs we’re still blaming the talent level?

Manning/Reed got beat a few times but the problem in the first quarter was that we simply didn’t guard Smith. On both his TDs he was unguarded. How is that a talent issue? Our defense was lost for the entire 1st quarter - that’s a preparation problem. Something that didn’t happen in the first matchup.

That said, our LBs have been a major weakness and we desperately need the young guys to take a huge leap in the offseason. The talent on defense is there, IMO. Going forward it’s going to be a lot harder to convince fans that we just don’t have the talent yet.

It's going to be a long off-season and 2025 because there isn't a win that we can get in 2025 that will do anything to wash this loss off.

It's going to be a long off-season and 2025 because there isn't a win that we can get in 2025 that will do anything to wash this loss off.

Not necessarily. There's no way to know how good Penn State and Indiana will be next year. We might play Ohio State in the conference championship game and we should be in the playoff hunt, as well.

The best thing we can do is wash this off and move forward asap. Don't let Ohio State keep beating us again in the future by looking in the rear view.

The talent on defense is there, IMO. Going forward it’s going to be a lot harder to convince fans that we just don’t have the talent yet.

I'm already there.

Ohio State is good, but so is Oregon, and the talent disparity isn't so crazy that it should have been 34-0. That's completely a preparation issue. The bye probably had more to do with it than talent, but Lanning should be open to any and all options for directly addressing this.

I have a hard time buying the narrative that the OLine is once again trash. The first 6 quarters of the season were substandard, then they went on a nice stretch that included neutralizing tOSU on 10/12, manhandling a 10-win physical Illinois team, having our way with Michigan’s front 4 and then doing whatever we wanted against Penn State’s pretty damn good DLine.

Sawyer was a non-factor on 10/12 and he got the better of AJ yesterday.

Sometimes you just get your A$$ whooped. Tip the cap and own it.

The Oline play in this game reminded me of the Dline last year against UW. We made their Oline miserable up in Seattle and we were able to get heat on Penix. Everyone thought we would do so again in Vegas but nay! It was a complete reversal and UW kept Penix erect. #thatswhatshesaid
