Dirk Koetter Accuses Oregon of Tampering

Post by StevensTechU »

Overall, insightful interview from one-time Oregon coach, Dirk Koetter. He's on his way out the door at Boise State and appears to not have any reason to hold back. One tidbit Duck fans would be intrigued by is the accusation of tampering, offering a defensive player $700k. Not sure who they have that is worth that kind of money, and surprised it wasn't Kage Casey.

I'd be surprised if the tampering rules withstood a legal challenge.

If someone makes $20 an hour at Burgerking, it's perfectly fine for McDonalds to call and offer $21. This is protected by law. If they (the NCAA / the schools) want to circumvent this, they have to include it in a collective bargaining agreement. 'Tampering' is a legally protected activity.

I also doubt the call was from the Ducks. It was probably from someone affiliated with Division Street, which operates independently from the AD. (That's if it happened at all.)
Willie Taggart is a dick.

To be honest, what's the difference? In the spirit of the rule, all the same to me.

Why is Koetter upset if the players are making, in his words, 2 to 10 times what Boise can pay? If he was offered 2-10 times his current pay, would he bemoan the boosters/school who paid for it? Why is it acceptable for him to make absurd amounts of money but not others?

If you're a College Coach bitching about NIL, you're a hypocrite and you should go coach small high school ball since its all about the love of the game.

I'd imagine there could be a pretty big difference from a legal standpoint. Can the NCAA even try to punish NIL collectives for tampering or is that completely beyond the NCAA's jurisdiction?

I didn't listen, only read the text, but I didn't get the sense that he faulted the players at all. I think he's largely just pulling the curtain back since he's getting out of the fray. If there's shade thrown in what he said, it's at Oregon for violating the tampering rules, not the players. If it was me, I'd probably feel similar.

As another poster noted, in the legal arena, none of it holds up.

In his defense, it is a drastic change that just happened with NIL. So to go from 0 to 100 like that does suck for the smaller schools that already had an uphill battle in many ways.

The hand wringing is comical. Gee, I wonder how the top teams get there and stay? How many years do you want to go back to see the same thing? The primary difference in today’s world is the increased transparency.

It’s interesting to see people standing up for Koeter here. He always had a weird axe to find with UO and Bellotti, and was always a prick toward UO.

It’s well known players have agents who handle NIL, and reach out to schools to see what the interest might be and what the numbers would look like. For a coach to say a school is tampering, seems like he better show proof. More than likely it’s the players agent talking to NIL groups, doubt the player of UO coaches ever spoke.

And it's no different than coaches leaving smaller budget programs for bigger budget ones, as has always been the case. They're all employees now.

100% spot on. He has had an axe to grind because he was never considered for the head job on multiple occasions.

There are rumors that he was interested in the job when Mario left and was not even interviewed so take that FWIW.

I don't think anyone is standing up for Koetter. I've never cared for him. 2nd tier coach, and like you and others have mentioned he seems to have beef with UO which is annoying.

He has an axe to grind because coach MB quietly let him go after two years because he is such a gigantic asshole to deal with. He has never coached anywhere more than two years (except at ASU when he as the HC). imagine Chip Kelly, sans the whimsy.
