UO has started 2 FR CBs before. In 2002 they started Gipson and Binns. That team started out 6-0 and was up by 21 points to ASU before ASU figured out that all they had to do was go into max protect and pick on the freshmen. Andrew Walter threw for 536 yards, and the rest of the schedule went the same way. Gipson and Binns had solid careers as upper classmen, though.
I think they started Ifo and T Mitch in 2011 after Cliff Harris got kicked off the team, and that turned out OK.

Thomas Graham and Deommodore Lenoir both future NFL players, got extensive run as true freshmen, especially Graham. Both had their highs and lows and neither was an all conference type of performer.

Thanks for the intel!stewbertwilloughby wrote: Sat Aug 23, 2025 9:27 am I've been holding onto this for a few days, but I got a little intel from practice.
*Take this with a grain of salt, it was from one practice. Who knows how they shift day to day.
Dante is the clear number 1. No real surprise there. The main WR rotation seems to be Moore, McClellan, Lowe, and Bryant Jr. Whittington is RB1 right now. The young RBs (Dink, Hill, Davison) may get more run than we think. Not sure if they're taking carries from Hughes, or if there are some legs that he isn't progressing as fast.
The bigger surprise was on defense. During the team periods, the number 1 CBs were BOTH Finney and Offord. It felt like the question was always "who is going to start opposite of Ify?" Starting 2 true freshman would not have been my guess.
Again, this is from one practice. It could mean nothing. I found it intriguing though.
RB thing is interesting as it echoes what Josh Pate has said. Noah as RB 1 is NOT ideal. He simply lacks the size and slips too often.
That said, I take it with a bit of a grain of salt. It wouldn't surprise me if Ify was in fact CB1(because Kenjon has also said this) and they're giving Naeem and Brandon BOTH an equal shot with the 1's to compete for that 2nd spot. Good news is, we don't have to wait much longer to find out!

My worthless opinion on Noah is he is a really good running back with good blocking but is hurt more by non-dominate line play than other backs (by UO standards). Just an impression formed without a lot of study on the matter. In fact it probably isn't worth a post but I 'm obligated to make a minimum number of posts to collect my NIL money from TK.

Re: 2025 Oregon Fall Camp
I have never taken the step back to analyze it, but my gut says you're right. All I would have said is that he reads his blocks worse than the feature backs he's been behind in the rotation (Bucky and James). He's the fastest guy in the RB room, has good size and I'd say plus strength. Overall, I think him and Makhi will end up as good compliments to one another.GrandpaDuck wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 9:38 am My worthless opinion on Noah is he is a really good running back with good blocking but is hurt more by non-dominate line play than other backs (by UO standards). If he's Noah from 2024, I wouldn't be thrilled. If he's Noah from 2023, that's a solid player. If he takes a step forward from when he was last fully healthy (2023), then he actually is a guy who could get some NFL run. His combine numbers will be good.

Re: 2025 Oregon Fall Camp
I’m not sure if I’m accurate with this, but I personally thought lowly of our guards the last two years and felt like the reason Bucky was our best RB in the Lanning era so far is his ability to jump outside (on top of also just being the best), he rarely seemed to run through the A gap. Harper was bad both years and Jones was bad in 2023, Strother was OK at best last year. But I do wonder if the guard play made a RB like Whittington who is less likely to jump outside perform not as well. Seemed like last year the most successful runs were following Conerly which James seemed to have an easier time doing. With Bedford and Pregnon, I do think Whittington will have a much more successful season in 2025 (along with being healthy and confident all year).

I'm most concerned about who is going to play STAR/Nickle.

Daylen Austin likely starts and there's a few others who are pushing for the backup spot.spacefrog13x wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 1:25 pm I'm most concerned about who is going to play STAR/Nickle.

I think it was either QB11 or Hythloday that said that no matter who starts we should expect a downgrade from Brandon Johnson.greenyellow wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 1:59 pmDaylen Austin likely starts and there's a few others who are pushing for the backup spot.spacefrog13x wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 1:25 pm I'm most concerned about who is going to play STAR/Nickle.

Re: 2025 Oregon Fall Camp
QB11 is pretty high on Daylen Austin being the STAR since he's got outside CB coverage skills and good measurables. Brandon Johnson excelled at STAR because of his experience and IQ so it'll be a bit different but shouldn't be much of a downgrade.

Speaking of which, hytholoday over on ATQ/sbnation had a comprehensive write up on the team this year. Good read in my opinion. Will be interesting to see if Stein can use Dante to his potential, and what the OL will look like.

He also did a 2hr 35 min podcast (dude can talk) where he discussed that and I’m sure the other items on the write up as well. I do think he’s overly critical of Will Stein but he brings up valid points. He did make the interesting comment that going back to his UTSA days, Novasad is a better fit for Will but Dante has undeniable talent.ducks5ever wrote: Tue Aug 26, 2025 9:06 pm Speaking of which, hytholoday over on ATQ/sbnation had a comprehensive write up on the team this year. Most concerning comments were about the OLine, granted he won’t back down from his analysis that transfer OLineman underperform their first year at a new program, but he has very little faith in World.

Re: 2025 Oregon Fall Camp
Verone was always one of the best interviews during his playing days. Don’t like that he only got a few years in the league, as I have always been a big supporter. That being said, his ability in communication, and what always seemed as what came out as wearing his heart on his sleeve, he should be a ringer to help UO in recruiting. There is no ego when he speaks. Those being recruited will notice his authenticity immediately. Love this hire.
