Oregon being overlooked
Everyone is overlooking Oregon. Yes, that was a depressing loss. But 1) Being unranked is wild. Our loses are to #18 and #12. 2) Our CFP odds are 2nd highest of unranked teams (after Nebraska) and 19th in the country. 3) We have a chance of winning every game on the schedule, except for Ohio State.
So really, I think it just comes down to that Ohio State game. We win that, we are in. We lose, we are out. But everyone just writing us off I think is just wrong.

Re: Oregon being overlooked
Well it's not just that we lost two games, it's how we lost it. So while our schedule is pretty favorable moving forward outside of Ohio State, I don't have a whole lot of confidence even against Nebraska, Northwestern, and @Illinois. If we play those teams like we did against UCLA/Okie State, I think we lose them all.

Re: Oregon being overlooked
The defense may still shape up to be elite, but the offense can’t walk and chew gum.
Dan’s real test will be to weather the storm this season, keep as many players invested as possible, get them back here next season, and keep the $$ flowing in.
…and then hire a world class OC in the offseason.
I also hope we’ve learned that our NIL dollars are best spent on a competent OL, rather than a reclamation project at QB.

I refuse to believe our OLine is full of 4 and 5 star busts. I think it’s more likely that the coaches in charge of coaching and developing them are incompetent and incapable of doing their job.whosyourwally wrote:The defense may still shape up to be elite, but the offense can’t walk and chew gum.

^^^^^^^^^^ The D aced it and the O was a mess with no cohesion or even seemingly a game plan. If there are positive and meaningful changes on the O them we might win some of those games. Re: Oregon being overlooked
Our defense suddenly looks every bit as good as advertised! Very impressed by our D over the past few games.
But our offense... hot mess alert!
This is the most boring offense I think most of us have seen in a very long time. I had some hope we might see some real changes after Dan Lanning inserted himself into the game planning last week, but nope! The only real changes were three quarters of Brock Thomas and a handful of wildcat plays that barely worked.
How about a few more QB runs? How about a little RPO? Or why not play with some tempo? Why do we always play so slow? Has this coaching staff not taught these guys how to play fast? All of these things could change the board and give our O line an edge -- which they badly need -- but there's nothing.
I can't help but think that if Chip were here, he'd have worked up some plays for Akili Smith Jr. to put his size and speed to use. Or he'd have schemed up a package to use Devon Jackson as a runningback. Something? Anything? It's so weird because Dan Lanning apparently loves taking risks, but I think he has trouble with realizing which risks are the ones worth taking.

Willie Taggart is a dick.

In addition, I think it's almost a given that Lanning will/should be scouting the transfer portal for a proven QB. I hope that Dylan R. wouldn't leave if that happened, as he still has room to grow, but I'm afraid of losing other star players, especially at WR.
I'd LOVE to get Weigamen from Houston if he decided to enter. That kid's a beast of a QB at Houston.

Weigman is a 5th year senior. Can’t imagine why he’d want to transfer anyway. I’m sure he gets paid well, and on a good team. I think the one to watch out for is JKS, but I think a lot of that depends on whether he left on bad terms. Things are very quickly souring for him at Cal.SuperDuck wrote: Mon Oct 19, 2026 10:19 amThis^^^^whosyourwally wrote: Sat Oct 17, 2026 6:16 am The defense may still shape up to be elite, but the offense can’t walk and chew gum.

Re: Oregon being overlooked
I've seen a few Cal fans worried that JKS is going to leave them this offseason. They suspect Miami would be a player for him as well as someone like USC or Oregon.

Yeah, I saw a twitter post insisting that Oregon already had a deal in place.greenyellow wrote: Mon Oct 19, 2026 11:35 am I've seen a few Cal fans worried that JKS is going to leave them this offseason. They suspect Miami would be a player for him as well as someone like USC or Oregon.

Re: Oregon being overlooked
Been thinking about this more and the way our defense is playing now, I do think people are underestimating Oregon. Myself included. Seems like everyone forgot we lost arguably the best QB in CFB. Don’t see anyone in the media making excuses for us like they already are for tOSU.
The staff actually found a pretty decent OL combination in the 2nd half against Nebraska, which opened up room to run once we inserted a QB that could throw over 10 yards. With the Sayin injury, if the defense keeps playing like this, the OL keeps improving even just a little bit each game, and Raiola plays well/Moore comes back, we could legitimately win all our remaining games. Big IF, but the path to the B1G title game isn’t as unlikely as it feels.

Ahhh, the clouds begin to part and a beam of light cuts through the haze. And a solitary bird can be heard chirping in the distance...dthomas=ddixon wrote: Tue Oct 20, 2026 4:52 pm Been thinking about this more and the way our defense is playing now, I do think people are underestimating Oregon. It was good for me to hear Lanning talk about the OL and how young some of them are but how he is trying to use high school guys more and transfers less. Maybe it's just spin, but I have been wanting to have OL coming up from high school like other programs so that by their junior/senior year they are a crack unit like some of these other Big Ten schools we play. Maybe this is what you have to go through in order to get there. That certainly doesn't go all the way to explain the myriad of problems the offense is having, but it did make me feel a little hopeful that we can get some improvement soon.
I also think it is crazy for Oregon not to be ranked higher the way the defense is playing, but I have a feeling Oregon will climb fast if they can put some wins together now.
