Here's the thing, the Ducks could get better by cleaning house and bringing in consultants. Pretty sure Jonathan Smith and Mark Helfrich would be interesting in being in the booth for a few weeks. And probably countless others too would hop in a private jet to spend a few weekends coaching the Ducks. Meanwhile that injects juice into the program and the athletes can start unlearning their bad habits. Might even keep the donor money flowing and stop some players from entering the portal. Most of the offensive coaching needs to be gone. They either made the plays, or had a significant interest in the plannings. But Lanning needs someone to call plays. Guaranteed high level donors will be in Mullens face tomorrow morning. Hoping for a happy headline when I read the news in the morning.
Complacency is the only reason not to.
Again (AGAIN!) this has been my issue with this coaching staff for a couple years now. We see all this talk and all these polished videos (which I love) about the team being connected, and driven, and giving their best, and fighting for their brothers, yada yada yada. But then we've seen repeated instances (even during wins) when the coaches clearly aren't giving their best efforts. And now here we are, with the team reeling, CLEARLY failed by the coaching staff, and we still have to wonder whether Lanning will remove the incompetence from the building. Failure to do so is COMPLACENCY!!! It starts at the top, and Lanning must understand this or he'll never be great.
I'll actually be incredibly happy with this season if it forces Lanning to grow up and accept his weaknesses. You can't overcome your weaknesses until you accept them. If this season turns out to be a huge "fast forward" button then it will be a massive win for everyone connected to the program.
