I said last year that Stein was a stat padder who failed to show up in big games. Now he's failing to blow out FCS schools. The O-line is an obvious weak link.

The defense looked solid overall. Especially while Bassa was in the game. The offense put them in bad situations. Especially going for it on fourth down from their own 37.

Everybody loves Lanning and acts like he's already won 2 titles already. I don't get it. He's recruits well and is very charismatic. The offense is trending in the wrong direction despite supposedly outstanding recruiting.

We got the USC-Texas-Notre Dame off-season national champion treatment from the media. Falling flat on face would be a bad look.

I wish Duck fans would keep in mind that Oregon's football program is strong enough to make mediocre coaches look very good. I suspect this is doubly true in the NIL era where we are outspending everyone outside of Ohio St and Georgia. If we don't earn one of the 11 playoff spots open to P4 teams, Lanning's seat should get hot. Stein already needs to go.
LOL- Oregon’s program is strong enough to make mediocre coaches look good?

You might want to rethink what you said because its beyond being anywhere close to rational.

Would you prefer Cristobal or Taggart? Maybe PJ Fleck? Helfrich?

Did you miss the part where Cristobal and Taggart got poached by major programs? Their success at Oregon convinced other schools they were better than they actually were. You are going getting fooled by Lanning in the exact same way.
And how did Taggart do at that ‘major program ‘? Mario hasn't exactly set the world on fire at Miami either.

We get it, you don't like Dan. Fair enough but to say his predecessors were better is comical. Mario had a generational talent at QB and couldn't figure out how to.use him. Mario was so inept at game management and scheming it was laughable. Willie was a straight up liar and his coaching acumen left a whole lot to be desired.

Mario wouldn't be at Miami if John Ruiz were not related to Mario’s wife and the pundits and fan base in Miami are still not totally sold.

I never said his predecessors were better? I said the Oregon fan base perceives Lanning to be significantly better than he actually is (the fan base acts like he's already won a natty). Lanning is a good recruiter, and it seems like he's improving the defense. But the offense, outside of the Dillingham year, the offense has looked like crap. But last year they covered for the lack luster offense by stat padding, however this year, they were just in a tight game with an FCS school primarily because of poor offense.

Also, I still think Lanning could succeed (and even win a title), but he needs to recognize that Stein is a liability and fire him. Stein is Oregon's Brian Ferentz.

Did you skip Droop 10s post? Honest not trying to argue with you but it's clear you don't like Dan and you’re totally ignoring the facts Droop posted just to further your narrative that Stein should be fired.

Some people should wait until week 5 or 6 before posting.

I wonder where nearly 500 yards of total offense is an issue. Is it the 41 - 50 passing? The 6.3 ypc by the starting running back? 10 different receivers catching the ball? The only real issues I saw were the offensive line, which is no secret to anyone here, and the red zone offense struggled. I'm not overly concerned about the latter. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Oregon have one of the highest rates of success inside the red zone last season? The offense looked stale, but that's mostly by design in the opening game against an fcs opponent.

Anyone calling for heads and complaining after the first week should probably logout and not return for several weeks, when there's a larger sample size

Almost like clockwork that someone calls for multiple coaches to be fired after even a lackluster win.

What Lanning has done to our defense cements him as a great coach.

Our O has been dominant for a couple years. Give our coaches time to adjust the issues they saw yesterday.

First, give a lot of credit to Idaho who had a solid game plan of not letting us beat them with anything over the top on defense because it allowed their lack of offense to not be an issue in being competitive last night.

Something that hasn't been brought up before is the use of the headset communication in relaying plays and at times the tempo of the game didn't seem to match when we had the ball.

Left side of the OL was largely fine, Pickard only had 1 low snap that I can recall but Ajani got beat like a drum on the sack-fumble but the other sack from the Herbert chip block had more to do with Poncho getting beat so badly he was out of position to handle it. His false start on the sequence leading to the missed FG was just another thing that added up on that drive. Idaho had a great slot blitz on 3rd down where they stunted the DL on the opposite side of the defense in hopes of pushing the QB into the blitz and I thought the look should have called for an audible since I believe there was still plenty of time on the play clock. Certainly something a first time starter at Center may not recognize.

Counted at least 4 times where the RBs tripped themselves up from larger runs, 1 of which could have been a banger and another stumble that also could have gone the distance.

I didn't like the run/pass selection or the lack of tempo at times. Idaho used last years film to essentially make sure they built a bend but don't break zone defense around it and in predictable short yardage formations, the Vandals did a good job on the DL of keeping their shoulders square and hustling outside. Something about our use of 13 personnel didn't sit right with me and I think it's largely because we were in the Shotgun while using it so the Defense never gave a darn about going to a heavier front because the run plays were slow developing. We definitely could have used a few more designed rollouts/runs for Dillon.

I really didn't like calling a fade route to Stewart with a 2nd and 2 scenario, those are always such low percentage plays at a time in the game we absolutely had to have a TD and we used an actual fullback with Dillon under Center on the next play for the TD. On the failed fake-punt attempt I'd much rather have seen us simply keep the offense on the field.

Kyler Kasper had a really nice catch in the 1st half. I'd rather be seeing us stay in 11 and 10 personnel more often if it means giving guys like him more reps than our 13 personnel groupings.

On the DL the young A'Mauri Washington has a really quick first 2 steps that showed out numerous times yesterday and once in a vital goal-line stand. He over-pursued on a screen early on but it had more to due with him simply blowing up a willing RG and driving him so far back so quickly and had he made the stop on that play he'd be having a lot more post-game attention anyways. Caldwell and Harmon are a nice 1-2 inside with Burch and Matayo outside. Matayo looks like he's going to be a Top 10 pick in 2 years and Teitum may be selected not far behind. Both of those 2 looked great on the Edge and we saw a ton of rotation at the spot. They got a full games worth of stats in like half the snaps.

The B1G refs certainly allowed a lot of contact in the WR/DB battles. As I recall, the 2 PI's they did call were on plays where the guy wasn't looking and ran into the WR whereas things like WR push-offs and the Stewart end zone contact weren't called. I think the one holding call on Poncho was tick-tack otherwise it didn't seem like they were eager to throw those kind of flags. Not really much to gripe about in the game from that standpoint.

Watching this the next day I suppose I'm not sure what to think other than I need to see more from them to know who this team is. They certainly had the shine from all of the off-season hype get tarnished and maybe that's the best thing they could have before playing Boise and Corvallis because those 2 teams will play just as motivated against us if we don't wake up.

Honest question-why do you put so much stock in what Hythloday says?

This person is an anonymous key board warrior and there's nothing wrong with that ,but the only opinions that matter are the guys who coach. If this Hythloday person had all the answers I'm sure every college coach in America would have him on speed dial.

Oregon has a cadre of people who’s sole job is to breakdown tape and you can rest assured Dan and Co were in the HDC late last night and early this morning analyzing tape.

So I'll put my trust in them

lol cause he knows more than all of us on this forum about football except for maybe StevensTechU and Duck07, and I don’t know football, and I enjoy duck podcasts and hearing duck football info. I’m a casual fan, and I as a fan am curious if the OLine issues are correctable or if play will look like that all season. I’m not expecting him to fix anything nor am I trying to say he knows more than the coaches but I am curious of this thoughts.
As a self described “casual fan,” maybe you should wait until you hear from your podcast idol before screaming about a position coach needing to be fired multiple times in the first game of the year.

I feel like we have two extremes as duck fans, we have the overly optimistic fans that can look at the Idaho game and stop say “oh well, bad game, we’ll still beat Ohio State and go 12-0!” And the other side that wants Lanning fired. Both annoy me a ton. As a true duck fan, I can look at this team, acknowledge the issues, accept the reality that this isn’t a national championship team or even close, and still love my ducks, watch every game til the end win or lose, and know that Lanning is the guy. Do I have some concerns some coaches on the offensive staff are behind the defensive staff and could hold this team back? Of course! A good offense shouldn’t struggle like they did against Idaho. So there’s nothing wrong with being skeptical of certain offensive coaches.

But then we have the other extreme, I saw Duck fans last night online calling our coach Scam Lanning. I think part of the problem is the overly optimistic fans create these false expectations that Oregon should compete for a natty every year and then some overreact when Oregon isn’t a natty contender. Dan is a great coach, to want him fired is absolutely asinine and foolish. Anyone that wants Lanning fired has no idea what it takes to succeed as a college football coach. BUT, is Lanning perfect? Of course not. Were expectations too high for him coming into this season? Probably. Does Lanning have some learning to do? For sure. Is he the guy for Oregon? Absolutely.

Here are some tough things I consider to be true about this season I believe all duck fans should acknowledge. This team has major issues/weaknesses, this is not a national championship contender, this team will have at least 3 losses, eventually we may need to see coaching changes on the offensive staff. Regardless of that, we can all love our ducks, care about this season, support Lanning, and ignore the twitter trolls for other teams who have had nothing to do with their team’s success.

Just cause someone isn’t as optimistic as you doesn’t make them less of a fan or not as smart as you, and we don’t need to expect this team to be national championship contenders every season. GO DUCKS!

Not gonna lie, I stopped reading after the first paragraph.

You are one those "the sky is falling" fans. The half that you claim to be overly optimistic, isn't. We all see the reality of an offensive line that struggled, play calling that was lack luster, and missed opportunities. The thing is, we're willing to wait for a larger sample size. Most of us want to see if adjustments will be made before making any hasty decisions.

I'm simply looking at the greater trend of college football (not just Oregon) which has repeatedly shown that new offensive lines tend to show massive improvements from the first and second weeks (and sometimes through the third week). So it's hard for me to look at yesterday's game and really panic about things.

Would have been different had we lost, since every loss in college football is so impactful. But we won! Thank goodness. That game was straight-up weird, the kind of game that often ends up biting the favored team in the ass. We survived, making it nothing more than a learning experience.

The way football works strongly indicates the Ducks will be much more themselves against Boise State. We've seen the same exact thing the past two seasons. Chances are, this is just more of the same.

A big reason why I've been high on the Ducks (other than all the talent) is our early schedule. Each game ramps up in difficulty up to Ohio State. It's the perfect runway. Last night illustrated why that's so important. Each game until Ohio State is a chance to take another step toward this team's full potential.

Relax and enjoy the ride.

I’m paraphrasing but I loved when Lanning said “I won’t disappoint you by saying ‘great win’, cause it wasn’t”. Lanning seems to go with the approach of being a straight shooter and letting the players respond. We’ll see how they respond Saturday.

That was the quickest & coldest "Ducks vs Them" ever. Clearly, Lanning wanted as little polish applied to that turd as possible.

For anyone willing to watch it twice, you can find the full game here. Bookmark this site, too, because they put most Duck games up.
