Pac-12 Coaches "Don't like Oregon's recruiting tactics"
Seems to be the consensus for why they didn't vote for Oregon for all conference teams. Specifically Peterson and the OKG gang didn't like them. (Despite Peterson poaching recruits while saying he didn't like poaching) which Oregon actually has NOT done a lot of under Cristobal.
What exactly is Oregon doing (besides kicking their ass) that they don't like? What's up haters?

When you are in a major city and you consistently lose kids to a school in a smaller college town, I could see why they are butthurt.GrantDuck wrote:Seems to be the consensus for why they didn't vote for Oregon for all conference teams. Oregon raised the standard in recruiting. We just outwork everybody and the Pac-12 coaches (and their wives) didn't like that.

AKA: pac12 coaches don’t like getting their butts kicked on and off the field.

Seems petty to me. Oregon hasn’t been secretive about their recruiting strategy. It seems to me other programs just don’t have the energy to duplicate it.

Re: Pac-12 Coaches "Don't like Oregon's recruiting tactics"
There have been rumors that Cristobal uses negative recruiting. I think that might be what the other coaches are referring to. The main example I've seen referenced is with Sav'ell Smalls. I'm sure others have seen this in one form or another, but the story goes that Mario did his best to run down UW such that Smalls completely took the Huskies off his list, until they got in touch with him and cleared up the issues, and ultimately he committed there.
I can't vouch for the veracity of the story, but certainly, we know that Smalls did take the Huskies off his list and then eventually came back around and committed there. And we also hear that Cristobal's recruiting tactics aren't popular with the other coaches. Leach made a reference to Oregon's recruiting in a presser after the Ducks pulled it out vs. the Cougars, implying that recruiting was the major reason the ducks won. We also saw how frosty the handshake was between Mario and coach Whittingham after the Pac 12 Championship game. So who knows. I still think it was ridiculous to take it out on the Oregon players in the All Pac 12 vote. Doesn't exactly reflect well on the maturity level of the other coaches, especially since most of the slighted guys were Helfrich recruits anyway.
There's probably a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff we will never know, but I wonder why Peterson quit and if it had anything to do with the increased recruiting pressure.

People in the know say that we don't negative recruit...we're just tenacious in selling what we have.

I don’t mind a little trash talk. Players do it on the field. I’m sure CMC did plenty of it at the U. I see the old farts jaw jacking one another on the pickle ball court all the time. It’s what we do. I doubt Helfich did though...

Everyone engages in negative recruiting to some extent. When Willie took the FSU job he started telling our recruits (I think it was Jevon Holland) that he needs to come to FSU, Oregon is too small of a stage for a player like him. No doubt that Prentice Gill is telling Johnny Wilson a million negative things about Oregon. And we do it as well, you can't recruit with positives only.
But I think we have a more positive recruiting style. Mario's main thing is creating an atmosphere of family and closeness. It's the same strategy Clemson uses, appealing to a recruit and his family that this is the best environment for them.
If other programs hate our recruiting, then good. Right now everyone in the conference loves Clay Helton, other than USC fans. It's better to be hated than laughed at.

This lackadaisical attitude to recruiting is another reason why the P12 lags behind other conferences.
As millionaires for coaching a game they should have thicker skin.

My thoughts exactly. Yet another reason why the conference lags behind.Duck07 wrote:This lackadaisical attitude to recruiting is another reason why the P12 lags behind other conferences.

That honestly sounds like a yarn created by delusional husky fans to justify why their program isn't recruiting as well as Oregon. Washington is a good program and Cristobal would look like a fool if he was trying to run them down. I just find this very difficult to believe.Phalanx wrote:There have been rumors that Cristobal uses negative recruiting. I think that might be what the other coaches are referring to. The coaches ask the players to give 100% on the field, so why should we expect less from our coaches when recruiting? All is fair in love and war................
