I hope the media and Iowa keep “talking (bleep)”

Post by bdkipe »

People can say what they want about Dan, but he has proven over and over he is a master at the dichotomy of telling his teams to “block out outside noise” while at the same subtly time working perceived slights into the weekly message.

College Football Media always is a roller coaster of moving from one shiny new object or narrative to the next and I find it completely hypocritical that:

- Bama has moved beyond their horrid loss to FSU (an awful team) and some very mid performances since then.

- TAMU is getting credit for going to a “tough place to play against a talented team” on paper (who likely had already quit on Kelly)

- We’re now getting crapped on for our win in Happy Valley
Excuse me, but Penn State was a night game, with 110,000 fans screaming for blood, against a loaded team that is basically the same talent composite (per 24/7) as LSU, had 2 elite coordinators and they hadn’t quit on Franklin yet. They were very ready and very motivated and we broke them…moving forward.

I expect this team to hear all the noise and be frothing at the mouth come kickoff at Iowa.

I note that the early line on the Iowa game has the Ducks favored by "only" 6.5 points.

Hey guys. Talk is cheap and Phil speaks his mind. Doesn't mean Iowa won't respect the Ducks. How can they not after your recent years of success?

Iowa's run game will tell the tale in this one. If the Hawks can run effectively, they win a close one. If they don't, they will likely lose. After watching the Indiana game, I'm not worried about limiting the Oregon offense (keeping them under 30).

My biggest reservation in this one is that Iowa hasn't beaten a team that finished the season ranked in several years. Hopefully this game will end that streak.

Iowa tries to drag you down to their level and beat you senseless. If Oregon can be explosive, (big if against a defense that is really coming into its own), they will have a chance. If they can't, then Kinnick claims another victim.

Safe travels to those making the trip. Hope you are treated well and have a good time (other than the outcome of the game).

Oregon is also 1-3 in BYE Weeks the last few years. So maybe it's your time! I hope not though, I'm hoping our defense/special teams plays up to their normal standard and holds yall to 17 or less points. If we do that, I think Oregon will find enough ways to score 20+.

No question that this game could turn into a slugfest, which is much the way the Indiana game went for the Hawks as well.

Iowa tends to struggle coming off bye weeks also. I don't think there is any question that Oregon is more athletic, especially at the skill positions. Chunk plays vs Iowa happen 20-30 yards downfield on the sidelines behind the corner and outside the safeties. If your QB can throw this ball, he will be effective.

BTW, really like your board!

I think you’re under selling the potential of Oregon’s offense, Oregon stopped themselves more than the Indiana’s defense did. Oregon’s super talented but young QB just was completely rattled and ran himself into 4 sacks with a clean pocket while consistently missing guys downfield. For Iowa and their great pass rush, this should be comforting because it has become clear to us lately that when Dante Moore gets sacked early, it takes him out mentally and it seems to take quite a bit to get him back. I also think we have polar opposite OC’s. From watching Iowa the last few years I feel like the offensive playcalling is too simple, easy to predict. Meanwhile our OC tries to be a mad scientist that’s constantly switching formations/packages and trying to fool opposing defenses rather than just trusting his own players. And with only 1 returning starter on offense from last year and a lot of young guys, they just seem to struggle at fully grasping and executing the Stein offense. If the Iowa defense plays disciplined (which I expect) and doesn’t fall for our OC’s pre-snap “eye candy” and if our guys continue to struggle at executing the offense, then you for sure have nothing to worry about. The potential is truly there, it’s just not coming together as we would’ve hoped.

As for our defense, for sure your run game will dictate the game. We have a very good DLine and arguably the best secondary in the nation, but our LB’s are not good. They just lack the instincts, athleticism, and aggression to be legit starters for a top B1G team. Our LB’s are often late to fill their gap and when they do they get pushed backwards by the ball carrier turning a 2 yard carry into a 4 yard carry, and because of their poor play our defense is not good on 3rd and short. A lot of duck fans are hoping we run a 4-3 or 5-2 and just leave our talented DB’s on an island daring Iowa to pass against them, but our DC has this weird tendency to almost do the opposite of what he should, why? Nobody knows. We saw this in the Wisconsin game last week when everyone knew Wisconsin would run the ball but we ran our mint with soft coverage and our LB’s 10 yards off the LOS. Or the Rose Bowl when he thought it was smart to have our short DB’s with average speed cover Smith and Ebuka on an island while blitzing when we had an elite DLine and Ohio State had a dinged up OLine. So part of me worries we will see the mint defense again and Oregon will just allow chunk yards in the running game.

I have no clue how this game will go, I do believe Oregon is more talented, but in terms of the coaching staff it’s two opposite extremes and that’s what it will come down to. Who will write up a better gameplan, the old coaching staff that has been there done that, or the young energetic coaching staff that tries to be innovative (sometimes too much)?

Fun fact, no team in college football has scored more touchdowns than Oregon since 2005 (or since 2006, or since 2007, or since 2008, or since 2009, or since 2010, or since 2021, or since 2022, or since 2023).

Thanks for the well thought out reply. FWIW our OC (Time Lester) is in his second season. He is a Shanahan disciple and is soooo much better than what we had. The prior crappy offenses were uncoordinated by Kirk Ferentz's son Brian (good riddance).

I agree with load the box and man up on the perimeter. I do think you will see Iowa spread it out more than you would think on offense to try to help mitigate this. We recently got one of our starting WRs (#15) back for limited action vs Penn St, which is a big area of need.

Should be a good one. Kinnick (like Autzen) is usually worth about 4-5 points, maybe up to 7 for night games. We'll see if that's enough.

Yeah despite what I said I have noticed the Iowa offense get quite a bit better since 2022. Someday I hope to catch a duck game in Kinnick, looks like a good stadium with a fanbase who knows how to make things difficult for opponents. While I love the tradition at Autzen, nothing beats the Kinnick wave to the children’s hospital after the 1st quarter.

A question for you, esteemed visitor. The Weather Channel shows a wind forecast of 10-20 miles an hour everyday. Does your stadium provide much wind shelter to the field? Does wind usually calm down in the evening as this might be a night game?

I doubt the wind will be much of a factor from the WNW.

No idea on whether it will calm or not. Depends on the timing of the front. If it were a south wind, I would say yes.

All things being equal (i.e., unless a front or something is coming in about evening time), winds tend to die down in the evening because the sun, which causes the air to mix, is no longer heating the ground.

Welcome to BrewHawk…your username alone instantly won you points with 90% of us (although I am sober, I love a good 0.0% brew).

Also, I was gonna send a big hug to OF4L, his wife and his father-in-law, but I didn’t know how that would be received so I will settle for a fist bump with prolonged eye contact.

All the pleasantries out of the way, permit me a moment of snark. Should we just forfeit and tell the boys to not even get on the plane? C’mon now everyone.

The lack of faith in this team (based on an at-best-error-riddleda-C-minus-effort against the #2 team in the country and a performance in biblical monsoon game) is appalling.

I predict this game is going to play out like Utah in 2023 (after a close loss to UW in Seattle and and a meh performance against WSU at home):

- Our opponent thumping their chest about how physical and tough they are.

- A pissed off, motivated, focused, physically/athletically superior (albeit young and maddeningly inconsistent) Duck team

- Probably being challenged throughout the bye week by their head coach who usually pushes the right buttons when backed into a corner.

Oregon is going to have spent a full 13 days listening to Iowa media…and pessimistic Duck fans/media….and now even Iowa’s DC. Even the national media is questioning Oregon. That $h!t tends to motivate this group. Why do you all think Cig zipped his lips (which are normally spewing mad smack) before IU played us?

Iowa has our full undivided attention and I’m calling the shot now.

Everyone saying “Penn State is broken” and our win over them “isn’t that great anymore”? Well friends, that “broken team” should have beaten Iowa in Iowa. If “Kinnick is worth 5-7 points” then 2 weeks ago Penn State was at least a FG or two better than the Hawkeyes (I realize the transitive property of sports is complete BS).

If I’m wrong I’ll gladly come on here and own my L.

Happy Friday everyone! Go Ducks!

I love the pre-game smack talk, however subtle. How much fun would it be if some people didn't think the other team could win? If that game against Coach Subprime was just a regular game without talk, it would have been just another in a long line of Colorado butt-kickings. I am here for all the Iowa talking. Even the fan that comes here thinking Oregon only scores 17. I mean, it's possible. The Ducks could all be stricken with the Iowa soybean virus right before the game and come out flat. But really, basing one's offensive expectations on one game is pretty funny. Did you look at any of Oregon's other games? So you are taking the best Iowa scenario and pitting it against the worst Oregon scenario and then coming to an Oregon board with the result. I love it. Whether it happens that way or not, I hope you come back after the game.

It's fun learning about a whole new set of fan bases in the Big Ten. I always thought Iowa was just a boring second-tier team with good defenses and farm-boy offensive linemen and crappy quarterbacks when we had that home and home with them in the early 90's. Actually, that describes my childhood view of most Big Ten teams, maybe Michigan excluded. I'm glad some of them are showing some personality. Makes them more fun to beat, or even lose to. I think Oregon will win this game comfortably, but it's a road game, and as we have seen so far in a new conference, traveling is hard for everyone. So you never know.
