No brainer for him. We literally have nobody on our roster. Even the most loyal human on earth would move on at this point.
For not having a coach leave, this might be one of the biggest starts from scratch it college basketball ever haha!

Does Tajh Ariza even stick around now?

Re: Jackson Shelstad enters the portal
Rumors are that Arizona and Gonzaga are the key players here for Shelstad. Hard to blame him for picking either one given Oregon will be in a 2-3 year rebuild.
At this point, I'm not sure where Oregon even begins the rebuild. They've got Ariza but I'm questioning whether he'll even show up in Eugene now. If he doesn't, they've got no one who you could build around. It'd take Altman basically finding an entirely new starting lineup and rotation in the portal, which given Oregon's NIL investment and recruiting, isn't likely going to result in a competitive team. I'm half expecting Altman to announce his retirement soon instead of rebuilding without any of his stars returning.

I understand lack of NIL funds is hurting Oregon basketball but isn’t Altman at least partially to blame for that? If Oregon football starts to decline and ends up going 3-9 in a few years football funding will also go down. Or if Lanning suddenly becomes super boring on the podium and shows little energy funds would also go down. It’s a two way street, as a coach your job in today’s game is to not only develop your team and put a good product on the field/court but market it as well, and let’s be honest, Lanning is far superior at that compared to Altman.
I think the reality is, love Altman or hate Altman, he’s a coach from a different generation, not this generation. If fans get involved and excited and attend games and tune in, then Oregon basketball will become more competitive in the NIL game but as of now Oregon basketball is borrowing from Oregon football to try and stay relevant. How do you get fan involvement/excitement? Good marketing and a good product, we haven’t had either in mens basketball the last few years.

Football fan involvement and attendance has been amazing since I got into Ducks football starting in the 1999 season. Even without Lanning, we'd pack out the stadium and have tons of passion. Even during the awful last two years of Helfrich, we brought the juice.

Re: Jackson Shelstad enters the portal
Honestly at this point I don't think anyone knows what's best for us moving forward. But I know whether someone wants a new coach or to stick with DA, we can all agree that NIL needs to be in the top half of the Big Ten to compete regularly. And we also know that MBB as a whole is lacking fan involvement regardless of who is coach.
I imagine if you put Altman on Kentucky or Kansas, he could have done better than they are this year.

Yes for sure football involvement has been great but I even remember it dipping in the Helf era and the sellout streak ending, so even football is affected by bad product and marketing, maybe not as much as basketball but it’s just the way it will be in college sports. If you want fan, win, have a good product, and market it. Yeah fans can say “we love Altman! He deserves another year”, then if you truly support Altman show up to the games, even in down years.UOducksTK1 wrote:Football fan involvement and attendance has been amazing since I got into Ducks football starting in the 1999 season. Wonder if there is a possibility that the powers that be (totally speculative), decided to allocate more money this year to the portal, versus dumping it mainly on Evans and Shelstad, and they walked because of it. Probably why they sucked this year, by allocating the bulk to those two, and Bittle, and got zero from the portal. Maybe a new thought process internally.

Re: Jackson Shelstad enters the portal
The ROI this year for the Big Three was not great with Bittle missing half the year and Jackson two thirds of it. Only Evans was healthy the majority of the season. It'll be interesting to see what kind of investment boosters and the AD put into the program going forward. If they cheap out, things will likely never turn around in the Big Ten and Altman will be gone soon.

Re: Jackson Shelstad enters the portal
This is possible. It equally makes sense that they don’t wanna be on a team with 0 talent outside of themselves. Oregon’s roster outside of Evans and Shelstad is probably the worst than any other Big Ten team’s 3rd best player and down.Everythingsducky wrote: Tue Mar 24, 2026 4:59 pm Wonder if there is a possibility that the powers that be (totally speculative), decided to allocate more money this year to the portal, versus dumping it mainly on Evans and Shelstad, and they walked because of it. And I mean that! Stewart and Lindsey are below average even as 6th and 7th men.
Transfer portal will be very interesting this year.
