2020 Draft 1st Training Camp Report

Post by Zyme »

Best…:
3) Cavaliers: Baby Bol
8) Heat: Shittu
10) Timberwolves: Obiagu
21) Grizzlies: Nwora

Concerning:
1) SuperSonic: Bagley
9) Hawks: Peters
13) Spurs: Langford
14) Lakers: Akot
20) Knicks: Lee

Round 1
1. Seattle SuperSonics | Marvin Bagley PF 6'11'' 225 21 B+ C+ C- B C+ A
1. Seattle SuperSonics | Marvin Bagley PF 6'11'' 225 21 B+ C+ C- B B- B
+1 REB, - POT

For the first overall pick this is not a great start. He was touted as the cant miss next big thing at the 4 spot and he really did not make a lot of noise in camp. He made some strides in his footwork on the glass, but he also looks to have taken a step back in his ceiling. While he showed progress, this is quite concerning overall.

2. Boston Celtics | RJ Barrett SF 6'6'' 205 20 C+ B- C B+ C- A
2. Boston Celtics | RJ Barrett SF 6'6'' 205 20 C+ B C A- C- A
+1 OUT, +1 DEF

The second pick looks to have made a very strong argument to be the top overall selection. The G/F Barrett looks to be a tailor-made tall guard in the league and made steady progress in his first overall camp. Very good work from Barrett.

3. Cleveland Cavaliers | Bol Bol C 7'2'' 235 20 B- C- C- A- C+ A
3. Cleveland Cavaliers | Bol Bol C 7'2'' 235 20 B- C- C- A B A
+1 DEF, +2 REB

Here is who I think really solidified the true top pick in the early going. While any of the top pick could have made an argument for, with his Blocking and top end talent. Baby Bol, as I will now refer to him for his entire career, looks to be the breakout star. The early strides he made in his footwork and even in his already impressive defensive arsenal makes this an awesome pickup for the Cavs. Hard to call the #3 a steal, but defiantly the best pickup in the top 3.

4. Portland Trailblazers | Zion Williamson SF 6'7'' 250 19 C+ C+ C C+ C A
4. Portland Trailblazers | Zion Williamson SF 6'7'' 250 19 B- C+ C C+ C A
+1 IN
Slow progression from the fourth overall pick. Solid, but nothing spectacular to report here. He made some progression in his inside attack but a lot of stability in other parts of his game. Hopefully this just means he is a late bloomer but you might have liked to see more progression from either his outside or defensive game to show true top end progress.

5. Toronto Raptors | Cameron Reddish SG 6'5'' 209 20 C+ B+ C C+ D+ A
5. Toronto Raptors | Cameron Reddish SG 6'5'' 209 20 C+ A- C+ C+ D+ A
+1 OUT, +1 HAND

One of the better snipers in the class made some very solid strides. He upped his stroke and his handling ability. Even if he never gets his defense to the point where he can be a true starter, he looks like a very solid rotation option right now and, with his stead progression over multiple categories, looks to have a very good career in front of him.

6. San Antonio Spurs | Malik Williams C 7'0'' 202 21 C+ C C- B+ C+ A
6. San Antonio Spurs | Malik Williams C 7'0'' 202 21 C+ C C- A- C+ B
+1 DEF, -POT

You take the good with the bad here. He got his defense up to the point where you could argue he could be an immediate contributor in back of a F/C rotation, but without continued progression on defense you will may never see him starting save for a bottom end team. The apparent loss of potential doesn't help his cause either.

7. Houston Rockets (from Bulls) | Dzanan Musa SF 6'9'' 202 21 C B C B C A
7. Houston Rockets (from Bulls) | Dzanan Musa SF 6'9'' 202 21 C B+ C B C A
+1 OUT

8. Miami Heat | Simi Shittu PF 6'9'' 225 20 B- C+ C B- C+ B
8. Miami Heat | Simi Shittu PF 6'9'' 225 20 B C+ C B B B
+1 IN, +1 DEF, +2 REB

How do you bet against a name with such premade jokes. Simisola Shittu looks like the biggest pickup in the lottery with outstanding gains in inside, defense, and (most importantly) rebounding. This kid looks like a huuuuuge pickup for the Heat and an immediate impact starter given the lack of quality in the Heat's overall F/C depth. Outstanding pickup in the mid lottery.

9. Atlanta Hawks | Lamar Peters PG 6'1'' 190 22 B- C B+ B- D+ B
9. Atlanta Hawks | Lamar Peters PG 6'1'' 190 22 C+ C+ B+ B- D C
+1 OUT, -1 IN, -1 REB, - POT

First true bust of the draft. Really big mixed back, mostly on the bad side. Peters made solid strides in his outside shot, but backslid everywhere else. Losing apparent top end potential, inside, and his rebounding this prospect may be picking up game cheques and not much else. He better turn things around quick or he may only be getting his rookie contract and not much else beyond.

10. Minnesota Timberwolves | Ikechukwu Obiagu C 7'0'' 230 21 B C D+ B- C+ B
10. Minnesota Timberwolves | Ikechukwu Obiagu C 7'0'' 230 21 B+ C D B B- B
+1 IN, +1 DEF, +1 REB, -1 HAND

He lost handling, and then went up pretty much everywhere else. Excellent progression from the newly-minted Wolf. He looks like he may make an impact in a lot of 4/5 rotations already and given the all but entirely empty Timberwolves roster he will be seeing a ton of time. The race for the top C rookie honors between Obiagu and Baby Bol will be one to watch.

11. Philadelphia 76ers | Nick Weatherspoon PG 6'2'' 195 21 C- C+ C+ B- C- A
11. Philadelphia 76ers | Nick Weatherspoon PG 6'2'' 195 21 C- B- C+ B- C- A
+1 OUT

Slow but steady progression for the later lottery Point Guard. Noting impressive, but with the glut of guards in the league right now, for the sake of the health of the league it is probably for the best. Not an impact player by any means but solid in any case. Going to take a few years to see this case bear out.

12. Los Angeles Lakers | Omari Spellman C 6'9'' 260 22 B D+ C B+ C+ B
12. Los Angeles Lakers | Omari Spellman C 6'9'' 260 22 B D+ C A- B- B
+1 DEF, +1 REB

Gains in defense and rebounding showed by Spellman make his progression. Solid pickup at the end of the lottery.

13. San Antonio Spurs (from Clippers) | Romeo Langford SG 6'5'' 201 20 C+ A- C B- C B
13. San Antonio Spurs (from Clippers) | Romeo Langford SG 6'5'' 201 20 C A C B- C B
+1 OUT, -1 IN

Win some you lose some here. Decent gains in his outside stroke but this came at the cost of his inside. Not great for a lottery pick, but at the end of the lottery you can afford to take a flier.

14. Los Angeles Lakers (from Magic from Pistons) | Emmanuel Akot SF 6'8'' 201 21 C+ B- C B+ C B
14. Los Angeles Lakers (from Magic from Pistons) | Emmanuel Akot SF 6'8'' 201 21 C B- C B C B
-1 IN, -1 DEF

Very concerning progression out of Akot. He looks to have backslid in both his inside and his defensive talent. Not a good start

15. New York Knicks | Lonnie Walker SG 6'4'' 205 21 B- B C B+ D+ B
15. New York Knicks | Lonnie Walker SG 6'4'' 205 21 B- B+ C B+ D+ C
+1 OUT, -POT

Solid progression out of Walker. A gain in his outside shot is a solid sign and if he can keep even this state he will be in a rotation for many years to come. Hopefully the loss of apparent top end potential is just an ephemeral loss. Here might be another example of the Knicks making the wrong pick given who came after but there were holes at multiple positions so the thought process was to take the more ready-now positions.

16. Orlando Magic (from Lakers from Nets) | Shai Gilgeous-Alexander PG 6'6'' 187 21 C- C+ C+ C+ C- A
16. Orlando Magic (from Lakers from Nets) | Shai Gilgeous-Alexander PG 6'6'' 187 21 C- B- C+ B- C- A
+1 OUT, +1 DEF

Excellent pickup by the Magic at 16. Gains in outside, handling, and defense make this pickup look like the next Sam Cassell.

17. Denver Nuggets | Sacha Killeya-Jones C 6'10'' 220 21 C+ C- C B- C+ A
17. Denver Nuggets | Sacha Killeya-Jones C 6'10'' 220 21 C+ C- C B+ C+ B
+2 DEF, - POT

Great gains on defense, but a loss in apparent top end potential may indicate a limited top end progression. In any case, you take this first year progression any day of the week.

18. Houston Rockets (from Hornets) | Sekou Doumbouya PF 6'9'' 225 20 C+ C C- C C A
18. Houston Rockets (from Hornets) | Sekou Doumbouya PF 6'9'' 225 20 C+ C C- C+ C B
+1 DEF, - POT

Slow progress here at 18, and in many ways kind of a boom/bust flier pick. You might say it didn't work out but given his raw talent you never know. Jury is out here.

19. Seattle SuperSonics (from Jazz) | Malik Newman SG 6'3'' 190 23 C B C- B- C- B
19. Seattle SuperSonics (from Jazz) | Malik Newman SG 6'3'' 190 23 C B C- B C- B
+1 DEF

Jump his defense is solid, and not a whole lost left to report. It could have been worse, but more of a watch and see.

20. New York Knicks (from Rockets) | Ira Lee C 6'9'' 235 22 C+ D+ C B B B
20. New York Knicks (from Rockets) | Ira Lee C 6'9'' 235 22 C+ D+ C B- B C
-1 DEF, - POT

Flier pick that didn't work out. Was not sold on this guy when I selected him and was torn a number of ways, clearly my concerns were borne out here. Not a good start at all. Most like he will be another that will be kicked to the ever growing dustbin of you Knick posts. And hey look, a better pick just below, I think we see a pattern developing here.

21. Vancouver Grizzlies (from Spurs from Pacers) | Jordan Nwora SF 6'8'' 220 22 B- C C C+ C A
21. Vancouver Grizzlies (from Spurs from Pacers) | Jordan Nwora SF 6'8'' 220 22 B C+ C+ C+ C B
+1 IN, +1 OUT, +1 HAND, - POT

For this kind of progression, you take this any day of the week to lose the potential grade. Gains across three categories make this easily the best progression in the latter half of the draft

22. Washington Bullets | Kris Wilkes SF 6'7'' 210 21 B- B+ C B- C- C
22. Washington Bullets | Kris Wilkes SF 6'7'' 210 21 B- A- C C+ C- C
+1 OUT, -1 DEF

Outside sniper got a mixed bag where he made gains in his stroke at the cost of his defense. You will take that honestly, and if you could make that same trade another couple of steps a B- A C C- forward will always have a place in this league.

23. Phoenix Suns | Luka Samanic PF 6'10'' 220 20 C+ C D C+ C A
23. Phoenix Suns | Luka Samanic PF 6'10'' 220 20 C+ C D B- C+ B
+1 DEF, +1 REB, - POT

For a later post, solid progression. Going to take a few years to see if this changes to anything more than just a 4th string post.

24. Orlando Magic (from Lakers from Bucks) | Brian Bowen SF 6'7'' 205 21 C- B+ C+ C+ D B
24. Orlando Magic (from Lakers from Bucks) | Brian Bowen SF 6'7'' 205 21 C A- C+ C+ D C
+1 IN, +1 OUT, - POT

Solid progression for the Magic G/F. Not great to see the loss of pot but for a back end pickup, solid progression.

25. Toronto Raptors (from Magic) | Gabriel Achterberg C 7'0'' 288 22 B C- D C+ B- C
25. Toronto Raptors (from Magic) | Gabriel Achterberg C 7'0'' 288 22 B C- D- C+ B- C

No real progression here, but late round flier this isn't surprising.

26. Golden State Warriors | Wenyen Gabriel PF 6'9'' 222 23 C+ C C+ B+ B C
26. Golden State Warriors | Wenyen Gabriel PF 6'9'' 222 23 C+ C C+ B+ B- C
-1 REB

Backslide of rebounding footwork isn't a great start but again late round picks are always a huge mixed bag.

27. Chicago Bulls (from Mavericks) | Ethan DeBernardi SF 6'9'' 224 20 B C+ C C+ C+ B
27. Chicago Bulls (from Mavericks) | Ethan DeBernardi SF 6'9'' 224 20 B- B- C C+ C C
+1 OUT, -1 IN, -1 REB, - POT

After last years draft, you knew there was going to some regression to the mean. You cannot win every pick you take. Bust, but then again it was a late bust.

28. Cleveland Cavaliers (from Kings) | Jalen Hill PF 6'9'' 215 22 C+ C+ C- B- B- B
28. Cleveland Cavaliers (from Kings) | Jalen Hill PF 6'9'' 215 22 C+ C+ C C+ B B
+1 HAND, +1 REB, - DEF

Mixed bag from the post. Probably not going to be making any impact any time soon even with the rise in rebounding.

29. Vancouver Grizzlies | Immanuel Quickley PG 6'4'' 184 20 C B- B A- D D
29. Vancouver Grizzlies | Immanuel Quickley PG 6'4'' 184 20 C B- B A- D+ C
+1 REB, + POT

For the last of the first, this was a very solid pickup. Not a huge change here but for such a late ready now prospect, excellent pickup here
