Colvin fell below expectations but he was really solid in 07 before he got hurt.

Colvin was just beginning to show progress when he got hurt.

That year was a cascade of injuries for the Ducks... Dixon was simply the final straw.

Week 4: WR Paysinger was lost for the season with a knee injury.

Week 7: Jeremiah Johnson and Cam Colvin were lost with knee injuries, as well (Sensing a pattern here?)

Week 10: Dixon had his first knee soreness...

Week 12: Dixon's knee is done.

Week 13: Nate Costa had been out since fall camp. Brady Leaf went down early in the game. That's three decent to excellent QBs and 3 more high level skill players gone at the same time. Oregon was down to redshirt freshmen at QB.

Week 14: New starting QB Cody Kempt went down with a concussion against the Beavis. The Ducks were down to their former 5th string QB, Justin Roper.

Never want to see that sort of war of attrition again.

Rsure Colvin made some progress, but not enough. Regardless his progess his senior year, he wasn't even close to fulfilling the expectations of a 5 star recruit. Thus, he was highly disappointing. 5 star recruits, regardless of sport, are expected to make an impact their sophomore, if not freshman year.

This is of course depends on the program and fan base. If you're a blue blood school, then the expectations for immediate impact are lower. However, a lesser program, like Oregon when Colvin arrived, fans expected him to be some kind of super hero. It's not fair, but it's what happens when people (primarily fans) fail to understand the variables that go into a player having immediate success at a D1 school. Fans of a school that regularly has many 5 star rated kids come into the program, have experienced how these variables can delay the impact of players.

Another layer between blue bloods and lesser programs shows in terms of depth of the roster. If a five star shows up at Bama, everyone knows there's a lot of depth at the school so fans tend to not have unrealistic expectations, and tend to not be disappointed. At a lesser school, fans see five star and have delusional expectations that lead to disappointment. Take Tyner for example, he was productive and better than many of the RB's in program history, but because he wasn't top 3 or 4 in program history, fans were disappointed.

All said, if you're disappointed in a player's performance because of their star rating, it says more about you as a fan than it does the player. We might as well title the thread, admit to a time when you misplaced your hopes in a kid you've probably never met based on evaluations of third parties who may/may not understand what they're seeing, and certainly aren't projecting how the skills will fit a given system. I guess that's too wordy, so let's stick with the current title.

We also lost staring linebacker John bacon and a few others if I recall.

The ONE time Hines was correct. He's not coming.

Good post, except for the last paragraph. That's literally what this thread is about. No s***, Sherlock.
